AP English Literature and Composition (3 PLUs)

"An AP English Literature and Composition course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work's structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone." from page 45 of the College Board's AP English Literature and Composition course description.

AP US History (3 PLUs)

"The AP U.S. History course is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in U.S. history. The program prepares students for intermediate and advanced college courses by making demands upon them equivalent to those made by full-year introductory college courses. Students should learn to assess historical materials-their relevance to a given interpretive problem, reliability, and importance-and to weight the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship. An AP U.S. History course should thus develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format." from page 3 of the College Board's AP U.S. History course description

Pre-course Preparation: Instructor request - Please bring a "best practice lesson" to share with the group.  This should be a lesson or project that the participant has effectively utilized in their teaching.

Instructor Information:
David Bilka has been teaching AP US History for over 10 years at Cypress Creek High School, a large public school with open admissions for AP courses, in Orlando, FL. He became an AP reader in 2002 and workshop consultant in 2004 leading both one-day workshops and week long summer institutes. David Bilka’s educational experiences also include a year teaching in Slovakia, a summer Fulbright-Hayes scholarship in China, and a summer Drey scholarship studying at Oxford University in Great Britain. In addition, David Bilka is also a teacher, examiner, and workshop leader for the International Baccalaureate Program.

AP Biology (3 PLUs)

"The two main goals of AP Biology are to help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology and an appreciation of science as a process. The ongoing knowledge explosion in biology makes these goals even more challenging. Primary emphasis in a AP Biology course should be on developing an understanding of concepts rather than on memorizing terms and technical details. Essential to this conceptual understanding are a grasp of science as a process rather than as an accumulation of facts; personl experience in scientific inquiry; recognition of unifying themes that integrate the major topics of biology; and application of biological knowledge and critical thinking to environmental and social concerns." from page 4 of the College Board's AP Biology course description.

Pre-course Preparation: Instructor request - Please get some rest before the week and bring their school calendar and a copy of the textbook they will be using (if they have that available).

Instructor Information:
Pat Mote has taught biology at the high school level for 34 years and at the college level for 16 years. She served as science department chair at the high school level for 15 of these years. She has taught AP Biology for 21 years and has conducted one-day workshops and summer institutes in AP Biology at the University of Georgia, Oglethorpe University, and Stanford University for the past 19 years. She has also taught AP Biology Summer Institutes at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, the University of San Diego, and in Monterey, California. She holds a BS degree in Microbiology, a MS degree in Genetics, and a MEd. in Science Education from the University of Georgia. She has been involved with the AP reading to grade the AP Biology exams since 1992, serving as reader, table leader, and question leader. She has also written multiple-choice questions for the AP Biology exam.
