Letter to the LIR Membership
Spring, 2008
Dear LIR Members:
Welcome back to Spring! As the world embraces renewal after the Winter cold and grayness,
it is time for testing new experiences and rekindling old friendships. LIR had a record 211
members for the Winter term, and the place is really jumping!
We have been reminded by a very professional and observant lady in the VSU Financial
Services office (Jenny White) that we have approximately $6,000 in LIR funds from several
years ago that have been rolling over into our account. This will cover our recent purchase of
two laptop computers for instructor use, and a small portion of these monies will be used to
buy new computer programs that have been requested, as well as possibly updating current
programs. An attempt was made to get them donated by Microsoft, but this was not possible.
All members are encouraged to attend the Spring Social. We will enjoy a delicious meal,
honor our volunteer instructors from throughout the year, and most importantly participate in
the election of officers to guide LIR through the next year. There will also be a Potluck
Luncheon at 12 noon on May 15, 2008 during which the new officers will be sworn in, and the
LIR troop of actors will perform several one-act plays for the enjoyment of all.
The curriculum this term includes many thought-provoking classes. Many members have
requested that LIR recruit speakers who would address universal concerns, and this has
been addressed. We still have many of our old favorites and are grateful for them. Whether
LIR continues in this direction is totally up to the membership.
The LIR board encourages members to attend classes for which they have enrolled. It is
rather disheartening to a speaker to prepare for a class of 20, and then have ten people or
fewer show up. Of course, one of the bedrocks of LIR learning is total freedom in choice of
classes and attendance, but it does help the speakers to have a realistic idea of the number
of students they will have in class. Unfortunately, as seniors we often have more pressing
appointments that interfere with our good intentions.
Again, we solicit your help with managing LIR. All of the committees could use extra help, and
a critical shortage in Curriculum and Hospitality has occurred. If you can help, please contact
Bob Brunston for Curriculum, or Carol Feibush (LIR President) or Suzanne Ewing (LIR
Program Coordinator) for other positions.
Sincerely,
Your LIR Board
