ALMOST, MAINE

by John Cariani

As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky over the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine, its residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.  Knees are bruised.  Hearts are broken.  But the bruises heal and the hearts mend – almost – in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

Please note, this play contains adult themes.

ALL MY SONS

by Arthur Miller

During World War II, Joe Keller and his business partner ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. When a shipment of cracked cylender heads resulted in the death of twenty-one army pilots, his partner was held responsible and sent to prison. Three years later, the jailed man's daughter, who was once engaged to their youngest son, has returned to visit the Kellers. The shadow of this past, including the loss of the young keller son, an army pilot who was reported missing at about the same time during the war, propel these characters inexorably into a climatic night of reckoning. The dramatic power of ALL MY SONS, Arthur Miller's first successful play, won for him the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play and launched the career of one of the most important American playwrights of the Twentieth Century.

DAMN, YANKEES

Book by George Abbott and
Douglass Wallop

Music by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross

Lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross

Based on the novel The Year The Yankees Lost The Pennant by Douglass Wallop

Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil (the charming but devious Mr. Applegate) for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he's left behind. With the help of a handy escape clause and a guilt-ridden temptress named Lola, Joe outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.  This musical features the songs “Heart” and “Whatever Lola Wants” and lots of dance.

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE,

NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY

Book and Lyrics by Judith Viorst

Music by Shelly Markham

Alexander is having a bad day.  A terrible day.  To be quite honest, it’s a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.  But then, everybody has bad days, sometimes.  In this delightful adaptation of her popular children’s book, Judith Viorst sets Alexander’s rather trying life to music and brings to the stage one of America’s feistiest characters.
Alexander’s struggles with life’s daily dramas will not only entertain but educate young audiences as they identify with Alexander and the obstacles he encounters, encouraging them to share their feelings and to realize that bad days happen.

VSU Theatre & Dance Area is committed to serving the young people of South Georgia and North Florida by bringing live theatrical events to them.  This tradition will continue in 09-10 with a musical for young audiences.

For tour information or to book a tour date for February or March, 2010, please contact Jacque Wheeler at (229) 333-5820.

THE PIANO LESSON

By August Wilson

August Wilson won his second Pulitzer Prize for this haunting and dynamic drama about the conflict between legacy and responsibility, hope and suffering, body and soul. At the heart of the play stands the ornately carved piano in the Pittsburgh home of Bernice Charles, a significant family heirloom that her borther Boy Willie wants to sell to buy the same Mississippi land that their ancestors worked as slaves. The struggle between brother and sister and past and future in this important work is a formidable theatrical encounter, transcending the bounds of plot and character into dimensions that are both historical and spiritual. This production is co-directed by Dr. John Gaston and Dr. Jimmy Bickerstaff.
