Almost, Maine

by John Cariani

As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky over the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine, its residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.  Knees are bruised.  Hearts are broken.  But the bruises heal and the hearts mend – almost – in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

Please note, this play contains adult themes.

All My Sons

by Arthur Miller

During World War II, Joe Keller and Herbert Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. Deever was sent to prison because the firm turned out defective parts, causing the deaths of many men. Keller went free and made a lot of money. The twin shadows of this catastrophe and the fact that the young Keller son was reported missing during the war dominate the action. The love affair of Chris Keller and Ann Deever, the bitterness of George Deever returned from the war to find his father in prison and his father's partner free, are all set in a structure of almost unbearable power.

DAMN YANKEES

Book by George Abbott and
Douglass Wallop

Music by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross

Lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross

Based on the novel The Year The Yankees Lost The Pennant by Douglass Wallop

Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil (the charming but devious Mr. Applegate) for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he's left behind. With the help of a handy escape clause and a guilt-ridden temptress named Lola, Joe outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.  This musical features the songs “Heart” and “Whatever Lola Wants” and lots of dance.

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE,

NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY

Book and Lyrics by Judith Viorst

Music by Shelly Markham

Alexander is having a bad day.  A terrible day.  To be quite honest, it’s a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.  But then, everybody has bad days, sometimes.  In this delightful adaptation of her popular children’s book, Judith Viorst sets Alexander’s rather trying life to music and brings to the stage one of America’s feistiest characters.
Alexander’s struggles with life’s daily dramas will not only entertain but educate young audiences as they identify with Alexander and the obstacles he encounters, encouraging them to share their feelings and to realize that bad days happen.

VSU Theatre & Dance Area is committed to serving the young people of South Georgia and North Florida by bringing live theatrical events to them.  This tradition will continue in 09-10 with a musical for young audiences.

For tour information or to book a tour date for February or March, 2010, please contact Jacque Wheeler at (229) 333-5820.

The Piano Lesson

By August Wilson

August Wilson won his second Pulitzer Prize for this haunting drama. It is 1936 and Boy Willie arives in Pittsburgh from the South in a battered truck loaded with watermelons to sell. He has an opportunity to buy some land down home, but he has to come up with the money right quick. He wants to sell an old piano that has been in his family for generations, but he shares ownership with his sister and it sits in her living room. She has already rejected several offers because the antique piano is covered with incredible carvings detailing the family's rise from slavery. Boy Willie tries to persuade his stubborn sister that the past is past, but she is more formidable than he anticipated.
