University Core Curriculum Requirements for Nursing Students

CORE CURRICULUM 

Required courses for Areas A-E 

*Courses preceded by an asterisk are recommended for the nursing major.

Area A: Essential Skills (9 Semester Hours) 
Required - ENGL 1101 and 1102 
Choose one of the following:  
*MATH 1101: Introduction to Mathematical Modeling 
*MATH 1111: College Algebra

*Prerequisite for Math 2620 (see area D.II.b.) is Math 1111 or 1101

Area B: Institutional Options - Perspectives 
(4 Semester Hours)
 
Two courses are required, each from a  
different area of the Perspectives.

Area C: Humanities/Fine Arts (6 Semester Hours) 
Required - English Literature course 
(ENGL 2111, 2112, 2113
Choose one other course (3 hours):

**Must take selected courses in Arts, Comm, Danc, Foreign Language, Musc, Tele, Thea, Phil, WS or a second course of the Engl listed.  Must be a 1000 or 2000 level course; refer to undergraduate catalog for selection of specific coursework (VSU core Curriculum)

Area D.II.b: Science, Mathematics, and Technology 
(11 Semester Hours) -   Required for Nursing Majors

Two semester laboratory sequences in either physics (PHYS 1111K, PHYS 1112K, PHYS 2211K, PHYS 2212K), chemistry (CHEM 1151K, CHEM 1152K, CHEM 1211 and 1211L, Chem 1212 and 1212L) or biology (BIOL 1010, 1020L and BIOL 1030, 1040L) 
*Note:  Students should check prerequisite for Biology 2900 (Microbiology in area F) at the institution prior to enrolling in the DIIB science sequence

Area E:   Social Sciences (12 Semester Hours) 
Required -  
POLS 1101: American Government 
HIST 2111 or 2112:  American History 
*PSYC 1101: Fundamentals of Psychology  
*SOCI 1101: Introduction to Sociology or 
*SOCI 1160: Introduction to Social Problems 

* Nursing recommends PSYC 1101 and SOCI 1101 or SOCI 1160 be taken in Area E
