Distance Education Options

Distance seats are full for summer/fall 2014. Students interested in summer 2015 should apply and be accepted to VSU as soon as possible.

Students may complete major coursework traditionally, in face-to-face classes, or from a distance via videoconferencing technology.  Access to courses via Distance Learning is available to a limited number of students on a first come, first served basis.  Students wishing to attend from a distance must obtain permission after admission to the university.  Students approved for distance learning must have equipment that meets or exceeds the requirements listed below. Please note that these are minimums, and higher processing, connection speeds, etc. will greatly increase call quality.

Windows

Operating System

  • Windows XP SP2 or later
  • Windows Vista SP1 or later
  • Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit), Vista, or XP (SP 2 or newer), with OpenGL 1.2 or newer
  • Windows 8 (only the classic Desktop user interface is supported)

Memory

  • OpenGL version 1.3, or OpenGL version 1.2 with the multitexturing extension.
  • Graphics card
  • Sound card: Any standard sound card (full-duplex, 16-bit or better).

Webcam

  • Built-in or external. You need an HD webcam if you want other callers to see you in HD. Note that some cameras have built-in microphones. If yours does not, you will need an external microphone. All microphones work well with Jabber Video.

Processor

  • For 720p HD video calls, Intel Core2Duo @ 1.2GHz or better.
  • For VGA video calls, Intel Atom @ 1.6GHz or better.

Connection

  • Broadband Internet connection with a recommended bandwidth of 768kbps upstream and downstream. You need about 1.2Mbps upstream and downstream for 720p HD video calls. Test your speed at : www.speedtest.net (VSU does not endorse any of the advertised downloads to increase speed; this link should be used as a speed test only.)

Mac

Operating System

  • Mac OS X 10.8
  • Mac OS X 10.7
  • Mac OS X 10.6

Processor

  • Apple Intel x86 processor computer, running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or newer.
  • For 720p HD video calls, Intel Core2Duo @ 1.2GHz or better.

Webcam

  • Built-in or external. You need an HD webcam if you want other callers to see you in HD. Note that some cameras have built-in microphones. If yours does not, you will need an external microphone. All microphones work well with Jabber Video.

Connection Speed

  • Broadband Internet connection with a recommended bandwidth of 768kbps upstream and downstream. You need about 1.2Mbps upstream and downstream for 720p HD video calls.  Test your speed at : www.speedtest.net (VSU does not endorse any of the advertised downloads to increase speed; this link should be used as a speed test only.)

Note:  On computers with limited processing power and/or memory, Jabber Video will use a lot of system resources, and reduced performance can be expected.
