General Certification Information
Candidates who graduate from or complete any of the approved education programs at VSU, submit a completed GaPSC Initial Certification Application (if this is your first GA certificate), or a completed GaPSC Certification Update Application (if you are updating an existing GA certificate), and pass all of the required assessments (GACE Program Admission and GACE Content or Praxis II for COMD, GACE Ethics Exit Assessment). Candidates must also meet all requirements for certification (e.g., minimum required overall GPA for program, “Exceptional Children course”) to be recommended to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for a certificate. The Approved Program Completion Form, an official transcript, and all supporting documentation are submitted to GaPSC by the Certification Office following receipt of the completed certification application, and unless previously submitted to GaPSC, a Verification of Lawful Presence form. Individuals who have a bachelor’s degree with a major that did not result in teacher certification and who wish to pursue teacher certification may enroll as a “certification only” student, rather than pursue a second bachelor’s degree in education. By pursuing “certification only,” students will take only the coursework needed to be recommended for a teaching certificate in Georgia. The “certification only” process is begun by evaluating previous coursework completed in order to determine what further coursework is needed to complete the certification requirements in a particular area. Individuals who wish to be evaluated for certification must complete a Certification Evaluation Request form and provide copies of transcripts from all institutions previously attended in order for a certification plan to be developed. There is a $35 non-refundable fee for this process.
Those individual interested in pursuing a Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) degree in Middle Grades Education or a Secondary Education (i.e., Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, English, History, Mathematics, Physics, or Political Science) field, must first complete a Certification Evaluation Request form and provide copies of transcripts from all institutions previously attended. This form is necessary in order for previously completed coursework to be evaluated to determine if any additional content coursework is required prior to admission into the M.A.T program. There is a $35 non-refundable fee for this process.
Individuals who hold a master’s degree (or higher) and who wish to pursue a certificate as a Media Specialist must complete a Certification Evaluation Request form and provide copies of transcripts from all institutions previously attended. The “certification only” process is begun by evaluating previous coursework completed in order to determine what further coursework is needed to complete the certification requirements as a Media Specialist. There is a $35 non-refundable fee for this process.
