Minor in Religious Studies

Religious Studies is an academic discipline that is shaped by interdisciplinary and multicultural perspectives. Religious thought and religious institutions influence the ethics, values, laws, public policies and social norms of cultures worldwide. Students who elect the minor in Religious Studies will complete 15 hours of selected coursework, with a grade of C or better in each course chosen. At least four of these courses, 12 semester hours, must be taken in courses with an REL or REL/PHIL designation. You can select from a broad variety of Religious Studies offerings including courses in New Testament, Old Testament, History of Christianity, Christian Ethics, World Religions, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and a whole host of other courses focusing on Religious Thought and Religious Ethics.

A Religious Studies minor prepares you to meet life challenges and professional opportunities with excellent critical thinking skills and a well-rounded world perspective. No matter what your major area of study, a minor in Religious Studies will enable you to communicate with a variety of people from different backgrounds. Students in the arts and humanities, the social sciences, business, and programs that are preparatory for the professions discover that a broader perspective on this vital aspect of human culture engenders a more comprehensive approach to their own disciplines. Think of your major in Business… and imagine how important an understanding of Buddhism could enhance your relationship with your Japanese business contacts; or your major in Nursing, and the absolute necessity of approaching a patient’s care with an empathy for their religious beliefs and practices; or your major in the Fine Arts, and how religious practice has influenced artistic expression in music, art, drama, and literature throughout the world for centuries; or your major in Education, and how important it is to communicate with students from diverse backgrounds with a thorough body of knowledge. In addition, if you are considering the possibility of study beyond the level of a Bachelor’s Degree, a minor in Religious Studies provides you with an excellent grounding for graduate study and will be an impressive addition to your resume for graduate study in Law, Nursing, Education, or Business.
