Teacher Education Requirements

  • The student must have:
  • a major leading to teacher certification.
  • earned at least 30 semester hours.
  • earned an overall GPA of 2.5 for all majors (except Communication Disorders, 3.0; Art Education, 2.75).
  • passed the Praxis I or GACE Basic Skills Assessment (or exempted it).

    Exemption scores are:
    SAT - 1000 (Verbal + Math)
    ACT - 43 (Math + English)
    GRE - 1030 (Verbal + Quantitative)

  • passed the Regents' Test.

    Exemption scores are:

  • Regent's Reading:
    SAT - I Verbal scores of at least 510
    ACT - Reading scores of at least 23

    Regent's Essay:
    AP English scores of at least 3
    SAT II English Writing scores of at least 650

  • successful completion of the appropriate "2999" course.
  • undergo criminal background check
  • professional liability insurance.

Initial Certification Students

Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree and are interested in obtaining teacher certification must meet all of the requirements for admission to teacher education (listed above). These students must either be admitted through the Graduate School if seeking "Certification Only", or admitted through Undergraduate Admissions if seeking a second bachelor's degree leading to initial certification. Initial certification students must contact the Dean's Office for information and admission for teacher certification.
