Read Ch.2 TEACHING ENGLISH IN MIDDLE AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS (TEMS).

Be prepared to discuss Ch2:

What are the characteristics of middle grades students?
How do middle schools differ from high schools?
Who are the students at risks? What are the characteristics of these students?
What are learning styles? What are the elements of learning styles? Describe YOUR learning style?

2. Refer to the references listed on page 30. Choose one of the following as an article
to read and a topic to research:

A. After you have chosen one of the above articles, make a photocopy of the article.

B. Read the article and write a summary following this format:

1. Summary—In one or two paragraphs summarize the article.
(Anyone should be able to read your summary and know what the article is about.)

2. Quotations--Quote the author(s). Choose three excerpts from the article and respond to each quotation.

3. Reflection—Did you find the article helpful? Interesting?

Note: All article summaries for this course should follow the above format. The length of your summary will depend on the length of your article. However, most summaries will be approximately two typed pages. All work for this class should be word-processed. Be sure to proof your work.

3. Purchase a copy of ABE’S STORY and begin reading this Holocaust memoir.

As you read, keep a reading journal. Respond to each chapter.
