  • Groups 1 & 2 should be prepared to present.
  • Go to the Georgia Department of Education’s Home Page and print The QCC’s for Language Arts for grades 7 & 8.  Make a note of this site—later you will review the Language Arts QCC’s for 9-12
  • Continue studying Chapter 5  and reading ABE’S STORY
February 3
  • In Class - Groups 1 & 2 will present in class.
  • Continue discussion of Chapter 5
     
    Assignments - due February 10, 1999:
  • Group 3 should be prepared to present.
  • Find a favorite poem—make copies for each member of the class.
    Make the poem yours—prepare a dramatic reading of your poem.
  • Find an article and a lesson plan on teaching poetry.  Read the article and prepare a summary—use the previously assigned format.  Bring the lesson plan to class—be prepared to discuss it.
  • Work on your ABC Book, which is due February 24, 1999.

    ***** Joseph Korn - Holocaust author and educator will speak to our class            and conduct a teacher's workshop on ABE'S STORY.

               (South Georgia Regional Library) at 9:30 am.

March 10
  1. Previous assignments for poetry are due tonight. Dramatic presentations of poems. Be sure to bring copies for classmates.

  2. Read all sections on teaching poetry in BOTH texts. (pages 202-206, 429 in TEACHING ENGLISH) and the section on literary analysis-poetry in WRITERS INC. Be sure to read these sections before attempting your lesson plans.  Your written lesson plans should be for one hour of instruction. Any attachments should be included with your DETAILED lesson plans.

  3. Prior to class, you should review the QCC's for the 8th grade. Write one detailed lesson plan on teaching poetry with references to appropriate QCC's. See the lesson plan outline and sugestions for objectives.

  4. Find three sites on the Internet for poetry. Bring these to class.
March 17
  1. Prior to class read Ch.7 and 8 of TEACHING ENGLISH.
  2. Review the QCC's once again. This time focus on QCC's for studying literature.
  3. Interview an 8th grade teacher. Keep these questions and concepts in mind:
    • What novels and/or major works do eight grade students read and study?
    • Is there a curriculum guide that is followed?
    • Do teachers have input into changes in the curriculum?
    • Review a literature text book that the students are using. Make notes on the content.
    • Talk with your mentor teacher about teaching a literature-based lesson. Begin writing the lesson plans. Share these with me on March 17.

NOTE: ALL OF THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES NEED TO BE CONDUCTED BEFORE CLASS ON MARCH 17TH.
