Departmental Mission Statement

The mission of the Middle, Secondary, Reading, and Deaf Education Department is to prepare and support educators to model the highest standards of professionalism in their field.

Departmental Goals

1. Establish collaborative partnerships with public schools, communities, and post-secondary institutions in South Georgia in order to develop and offer programs that prepare exemplary teachers.

2. Model and integrate effective technology use into the learning process.

3. Contribute to the further development and knowledge base of education on a local, national, and international level through training, leadership, and research.

4. Develop teacher education programs that exemplify the five propositions of accomplished teaching as described by The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and meet the standards for excellence stated by professional organizations NCATE, AMLE, and CEC.

        a. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

        b. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.

        c. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.

        d. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.

        e. Teachers are members of learning communities.

Departmental Vision

Members of the Middle, Secondary, Reading, and Deaf Education Department will use all available resources to prepare exemplary teachers for the 21st century.
