Welcome
To All Recently Admitted Middle, Secondary, Reading, Interpreting, & Deaf Education Students:
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Department of Middle, Secondary, Reading, & Deaf Education. We, the faculty and staff, welcome you now and will shortly wish you congratulations and farewell. You will only be with us a short while. During your stay with us you will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become an effective educator and positively impact the learning of students. As indicated by the departmental name, the mission of the department is inclusive for those students in undergraduate programs in Middle Grades Education, Deaf Education, and American Sign Language Interpreting. In addition, course work for certification and graduate degrees are available for candidates for certification in Middle Grades and Secondary Education, Reading Education, and Deaf Education.
You enter the program with a strong liberal arts background from your core classes and that provides a foundation on which you will build your professional training. In your professional program you will acquire additional subject content, knowledge of the learner, and sound pedagogical practices. The courses you take and the field experiences you have are designed to prepare professionals who manifest the requisite knowledge, dispositions, and competencies deemed necessary to teach young people in ways that enhance their overall growth and development in the physical, motor, language, emotional, social, cognitive, and moral realms.
The faculty practices teaming and hands-on pedagogy. They are available to assist and support you as you learn about students in your identified major and how to apply that knowledge in field-based interactions with students. I think you will find the faculty to be dynamic, knowledgeable and practical.
Apprenticeships, practicums, and student teaching when participated in wholeheartedly, makes a lasting contribution to your success. This is the time you are bridging the gap between educational theory and practice. Your mentor team and supervisor will be there to guide and support you through this exciting time.
Our goal is "Developing Professionals with Schools." The faculty has high expectations for you and have designed a program to support your development as a reflective professional. The information you find in the program and through your advisor will assist you in "programming yourself for success."
Sincerely,
Barbara Stanley, Department Head
