MINUTES OF THE MEETING
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, September 26, 2002, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Hertzog, Price, Reffel, Gunter, Atterbom, Gibbs, Bauer, and Ms. Roberts.
Dr. Ducharme moved approval of a number of curricular changes from the Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education; Dr. Bauer seconded the motion. The proposed changes primarily involved revised titles, revised credit hours, revised course descriptions, and changes in course prefixes. She explained the changes for: MSED 2000, SEED 3000, SEED 3010, SEED 4100, SEED 4200, SEED 4300, SEED 4400, and SEED 4620; Dr. T. Reed asked Dr. Ducharme to provide a syllabus for SEED 4620. At this point, Dr. T. Reed asked Dr. Ducharme to complete the remainder of her explanations at next week's meeting.
Dr. T. Reed led a discussion about instructional planning of pre-service teachers, specifically lesson planning, and how the process was being taught throughout the COE. Dr. T. Reed asked department heads to appoint faculty members from their departments to meet as a committee to discuss instructional planning, short- and long-term planning, and components of lesson plans. Dr. Jim Reffel will chair the committee. The committee members appointed are: Drs. Dallman, Gerber, Stanley, C. Backes, Worth, M. Griffin, Hummel, and Ms. Minor. Once the committee has reached agreement, Dr. Reffel will report back to Executive Committee.
Dr. T. Reed reported that Dr. Kettlewell (BOR Office) had appointed a Teacher Recruitment Subcommittee of the BOR Teacher Preparation Committee; Dr. T. Reed has been asked to chair the subcommittee. The subcommittee met this summer and developed a plan for their recruitment work. Dr. T. Reed distributed a handout showing the five parts of the plan: customized alternative certification programs, teacher career center, system and institutional teacher production targets, critical checkpoints for aspiring teachers, and state and USG policy changes for teacher preparation and practice. Dr. T. Reed noted that this subcommittee was partially the result of the fact that the state needs approximately 10,000 new teachers each year and the USG teacher preparation programs are producing approximately 3,000 new teachers each year. The subcommittee will organize into regional teams; other members will be added to the teams. A retreat will be held on October 13-15 to discuss the subcommittee's work.
Dr. Price asked department heads, if they had not already done so, to give her the names of faculty representatives from their departments to serve on the faculty load committee.
Dr. Reffel distributed a handout dealing with critical and creative thinking. Dr. Reffel briefly explained the handout. Dr. T. Reed suggested that Dr. Reffel present this information at a COE brown bag lunch.
A discussion followed about preparing teachers to teach students who have English as a second language. It was noted that local schools are enrolling more non-English speaking students each year.
Dr. T. Reed led a discussion about when the COE brown bag lunches should be held. It was decided that, for the time being, they would continue to be held on Friday. Dr. T. Reed will send a list of dates to COE faculty via e-mail.
Dr. Atterbom distributed a curricular proposal to change the name of the Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science degree to a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology. This proposal will be discussed at a later meeting.
Dr. T. Reed asked department heads to send him position announcements for vacant positions in their departments.
Topics for discussion at next week's meeting will include GSTEP and curricular proposals.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:05 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Donnie J. McGahee
