MINUTES OF THE MEETING

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, September 21, 2006, at 8:30 a.m. in the COE Conference Room (Room 235) in the Education Center with Dean Gunter presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Reffel, Martinez, Griffin, Hilgert, Bauer, Galeano, Brovey (for Leech), Stanley, Mr. Pearce, and Ms. Roberts. Guest: Dr. Judd.

Dean Gunter stated that he had reviewed the evidence room with Dr. Lee and thought that it was very impressive. He thanked everyone for his/her efforts in getting this task accomplished and asked department heads to please thank their faculty members for their hard work. Dean Gunter expressed his gratitude to Dr. Lee for her countless hours of work in getting the evidence room ready.

Ms. Roberts distributed a handout showing that there were 230 students enrolled in 2999 courses during summer semester. Of these 230 students, 56 (24 percent) were admitted to teacher education at the end of summer semester. Ms. Roberts also reported that there were 504 students enrolled in 2999 classes during fall semester. She reminded department heads that students would be admitted to teacher education two times during the semester--at mid-term and at the end of the semester. She also reminded department heads that students must enroll in 2999 every semester until an "S" grade is received. Ms. Roberts distributed a handout containing information about 2999 courses.

On behalf of Dr. Gerber, Ms. Roberts noted that Parents' Day is this coming Saturday. She reminded department heads that Dr. Gerber needs brochures and any other information which they might want available for parents to pick up. She also reminded department heads to send the names of their departmental representatives who will attend Parents' Day to Dr. Gerber. Ms. Roberts distributed a handout which she had prepared for Parents' Day which lists all of the COE programs and the contact person for each program.

Ms. Roberts reminded everyone that Homecoming is October 7. Activities will begin at 11:00 a.m. at University Center.

Ms. Roberts reported on the on-going discussion with Scott Donner about the COE criminal background check process. Dr. McGahee raised the point again that if Public Safety assumes the entire criminal background check process, admission to teacher education for students may likely be delayed. After discussion, it was decided to ask Ms. Roberts to check with Mr. Donner to see if there was a possibility of someone in the COE having access to the state database so that the entire process could remain in the COE. Ms. Roberts will report back at next week's meeting.

Dr. McGahee announced that there is a possibility that VSU will be a GACE testing site after all. Mr. Mike Gibbons, the testing officer for the university, was contacted by NES last week; NES asked to visit campus this coming Monday to look at the campus facilities again. Dr. McGahee will keep everyone informed of developments about this issue.

Dean Gunter noted that October 17 is the deadline for early registration for the AACTE conference. In order to take advantage of the reduced rate, there must be at least ten faculty interested in attending. Anyone interested in attending should complete the registration form and get it to Dean Gunter.

Dean Gunter reviewed the agenda for the NCATE/PSC visit. He is continuing to work on getting the interview schedules for the various groups (principals, teachers, students, etc.) finalized.

Dean Gunter reminded department heads that departments should be working on the impending Area F changes; these changes must be in place Fall Semester, 2007. Dean Gunter noted that, with these changes, a good opportunity existed to do things differently. He also noted that changes should be made that directly linked to meeting required NCATE and PSC standards. This issue will be discussed more at next week's meeting.

Dr. Bauer announced that he had met with Mr. Robert Tindall about facilities for the Department of Psychology and Counseling. Dr. Bauer noted that several different options were considered and discussed. Discussion about this issue will be on-going.

Dean Gunter noted that he knew that several departmental scretaries' notary public commissions were about to expire. If these secretaries will see Debra Ryals, she will tell them how to get them renewed.

Dean Gunter announced that at the Executive Committee meeting two weeks from now he plans for each department head to complete a program review on his/her departmental programs using the PSC program report template. This exercise will have a two-fold purpose: (1) to help each department head to become more familiar with his/her departmental data, and (2) to provide a "starting point" for the PSC team in writing program reports.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:58 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Donnie J. McGahee
