The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, September 20, 2001, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Hertzog, Myers-Jennings, Gibbs, Atterbom, Gunter, Siegrist, Price, Bauer, Swank, M. Reed, Mr. Pearce, Mr. Moss, and

Ms. Roberts.

Dr. M. Reed distributed copies of the PSC/NCATE Institutional Report. Copies will be made to be distributed to COE faculty.

Dr. Swank distributed copies of a survey instrument and the results of the survey. The survey was given to COE students participating in the fall Opening School Experience (OSE); generally, the purpose of the survey was to determine students' opinions of the value of the OSE. Overall, the OSE was viewed in a positive manner. Discussion followed about various facets of the OSE, such as: (1) Should the debriefing for the OSE be a part of the student teaching seminars, (2) The purpose of the OSE, (3) The amount of work required in the OSE, (4) Should the current requirements in OSE be changed from a pencil/paper portfolio to an electronic portfolio, (5) What should be included in the electronic portfolio, and (6) How should the OSE electronic portfolio be evaluated. It was decided that the committee would re-visit the OSE issue at its October 18 meeting, after collecting information from students and mentor teachers.

Dr. T. Reed led a discussion about how the COE departments are incorporating technology. Further discussion followed about why teachers in the field are not incorporating technology in their classes. One theory was that school administrators greatly impact how technology is perceived by teachers. Dr. T. Reed emphasized the importance of our student teachers incorporating technology during their student teaching experience. Dr. T. Reed asked Drs. Gunter, Price, Gibbs, and Ducharme to serve as a committee to determine how technology is integrated during the student teaching experience.

Dr. M. Reed discussed the PSC/NCATE Institutional Report. She explained how each standard had been addressed. The report had been mailed to the visiting team members yesterday (Wednesday, September 19). The team members had also been sent copies of the undergraduate and graduate catalogs as well as a copy of the COE assessment matrix.

Dr. Doris Jenkins, chair of our NCATE visiting team, will be here on October 7 and 8 for our pre-visit.

Dr. Gunter distributed a draft copy of proposed changes in the M.Ed. program in Special Education/Mild Disabilities. This proposal will be submitted to the Teacher Education Council for approval before it is submitted for final approval by the Executive Committee.

Dr. M. Reed asked department heads to review the student teaching survey results (STPIS) carefully to determine if any needed changes were needed in programs based on these results. Dr. M. Reed announced that some of our Higher Education majors were reviewing IRP (Institutional Research and Policy) data collected by Mike Crowe's office.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:55 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
