The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, October 12, 2000, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Siegrist, Gibbs, Gunter, Gerber, Swank, Corbin, Langford (for Atterbom), M. Reed, Bauer, and Ms. Roberts. Guest: Dr. Schmertzing.
Dr. T. Reed introduced a discussion of the use of the computer labs in the Education Center. This past summer, the EDL research classes and the ECRE technology classes were moved to Room 122. Dr. Schmertzing explained that this room was not a good location for the research classes. Because the computers in this lab sit on top of the desks, students do not have enough work space. Dr. T. Reed asked Dr. McGahee for his input about this situation; Dr. McGahee responded that he had no objection to the EDL and ECRE classes moving back to Room 262, where they used to be scheduled. It was decided, therefore, that effective Summer Semester, 2001, Room 262 would be used only to schedule the EDL and ECRE classes. Further, Dr. T. Reed explained to Dr. Gibbs and Dr. Siegrist that they would be totally responsible for this lab. This means working together to schedule their classes, unlocking and locking the room, keeping up with all needed supplies, and dealing with any computer problems. The Department of Vocational Education will no longer have any responsibility for this lab, effective summer semester.
Dr. T. Reed led a discussion of student complaints. He emphasized that faculty should be concerned about, and aware of, student rights. He suggested that faculty have a dialog about this issue in departmental meetings. He stated that complaints of an academic nature should follow the normal channels. Concerns about affirmative action and harassment should be referred to the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs and Multicultural Affairs. Dr. T. Reed intends to talk with Maggie Viverette about how to deal with specific situations. Dr. T. Reed asked Drs. Siegrist and Ducharme to talk with Dr. Frances Paterson about developing some type of training for department heads about how to handle student complaints.
Dr. T. Reed announced that Bobby Watson is currently replacing all of the teaching stations in the Education Center classrooms.
Ms. Roberts announced that she would schedule a training session on GUI Banner for department heads and their secretaries next week after the Executive Committee meeting.
Dr. Swank announced that representatives from the Professional Standards Commission (PSC) would be here on Wednesday, October 25, at 9:00 a.m. They will be happy to answer questions relating to certification issues.
Dr. T. Reed announced that the Board of Regents' committee which deals with core curriculum issues had turned down the request from VSU to place PSYC 2700 (Human Growth and Development) in Area E of the core. At the Academic Committee meeting where this was announced on Monday, Dr. Bauer made a strong case for asking the Board of Regents' committee to reconsider its decision. For example, Darton College has this course approved for its core curriculum. Dr. Bauer will send a written request to Dr. Levy asking that he formally ask the BOR committee to reconsider its decision. In the meantime, Dr. T. Reed suggested that course substitutions be made for using PSYC 2700 in Area E of the core.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:11 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Donnie J. McGahee
