The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, May 18, 2000, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dean Toth presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Bauer, Rimington, Swank, Gunter, T. Reed, Dixey, Andrews (for Atterbom), Recesso (for Price), and Ms. Roberts. Guests: Drs. Julie Lee and Julie Reffel.
Dean Toth announced that Dr. Atterbom had come home from the hospital yesterday; he is recuperating well from his surgery.
Dean Toth announced that he, Dr. Siegrist, Dr. Gibbs, and Dr. Price had attended an informational meeting in Columbus last week concerning the proposed cooperative doctoral program with Columbus State. Approximately 60-70 people were in attendance.
Dr. Gunter introduced proposed new programs--a B.S.Ed. and M.Ed. in Interrelated Special Education/Early Childhood. Drs. Gunter, Dixey, Lee, and Reffel answered questions regarding the programs. This program is a five-year program which will provide certification in pre-k-fifth grade in Early Childhood, Special Education, or Interrelated Special Education. This program is similar to the current Special Education/Mild Disabilities program. This program will have the same content requirements in mathematics and reading that the new Early Childhood program will have. Several issues relating to the programs were discussed: The amount of content in the programs; coverage of the topic of collaboration; the numbering of some of the proposed new courses; and requirements for the student teaching and seminar components of the programs. The new courses for the programs are being assigned the prefix of SEEC (Special Education/Early Childhood). Dean Toth stated that he felt the programs should be listed in both the Special Education and Early Childhood sections of the undergraduate and graduate bulletins. Several suggestions were made for changes in the wording of some of the course descriptions. Dr. Gunter will make the suggested changes in the programs and present them for approval at next week's Executive Committee meeting.
Dean Toth distributed copies of curricular changes in the Art Education program; these changes will be considered for approval at next week's meeting.
Dean Toth distributed copies of the qualitative criteria for admission to the teacher education program at Idaho State.
Dean Toth announced that Dr. Dixey had resigned her position as head of the Department of Early Childhood and Reading Education, effective June 30. Dr. Dixey will return to a teaching position within the department.
Dean Toth reviewed the status of the vacancies within the COE: Vocational Education is interviewing a candidate next week; interviews have been completed for a position in Early Childhood and Reading Education and Dean Toth is waiting for a recommendation; Special Education and Communication Disorders has requested permission to interview two candidates; Kinesiology and Physical Education has filled one position; a position in the Department of Psychology and Counseling is being re-advertised; Educational Leadership has filled all of its vacancies; Middle Grades and Secondary Education has made a recommendation for a candidate to fill its position.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:10 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Donnie J. McGahee
