The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, May 10, 2001, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Gerber, Swank, Gunter, Atterbom, Livingston (for Siegrist), Price, M. Reed, Gibbs, and Bauer.
Dr. T. Reed announced that Dr. Stephen Portch has resigned his position as Chancellor of the University System of Georgia.
Dr. T. Reed asked Drs. Ducharme and Gibbs to provide him with the number of field experience hours for the majors in the Departments of Middle Grades and Secondary Education and Early Childhood and Reading Education. Dr. T. Reed needs this information in order to respond to the Board of Regents' Teacher Education Principles.
Dr. T. Reed asked the department heads to provide him with the teaching loads of their faculty for Fall Semester, 2000, and Spring Semester, 2001. This information is due to him by May 17.
Dr. T. Reed reported that the COE will receive $150,000 in technology funds; approximately $80,000 of this amount will be available now and $70,000 during fall semester. Part of these funds will be used for: replacement computers for Rooms 240 and 244; replacement computers for the KSPE lab; a new video lab next to the IT lab; a new wireless cart which can be used in a variety of ways; and a new server. Dr. T. Reed asked for input on other immediate technology needs.
The proposed changes in Area F (PSYC 2700) will be discussed at next week's meeting.
Dr. T. Reed led a discussion of the new PSC (Professional Standards Commission) technology requirements. Dr. Ducharme suggested that ACED 7600 (Applied Computer Technology) might be used as a suitable course to meet the technology requirements for teachers. Dr. T. Reed asked Dr. Ducharme to meet with Drs. McElvey and Thomerson, instructors for the ACED 7600 course, to examine the technology requirements and determine how many of these requirements are covered in ACED 7600. Dr. Livingston suggested that perhaps the ACED 7600 course and part of the INTECH training might meet the technology requirements for leadership personnel. Dr. Price suggested that perhaps ITED 7000 might be used to satisfy the technology requirements for service personnel. Dr. T. Reed suggested that Dr. Price might want to have one of her faculty members to meet with Dr. Ducharme also. The meeting will be on Tuesday, May 15, at 10:00 a.m. in the Conference Room.
Dr. M. Reed distributed several handouts: She asked each department head to review his/her list of graduate degrees; she distributed each department's diversity plan and emphasized that each department should have a diversity report; and she distributed the COE student diversity report for 1999-2000. It was suggested that Dr. M. Reed might also obtain additional diversity information from Ms. Roberts.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:44 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Donnie J. McGahee
