MINUTES OF THE MEETING

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, July 13, 2006, at 8:30 a.m. in Room 255 in the Education Center with Dean Gunter presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Bauer, Stanley, Hilgert, McElvey (for Martinez), Reffel, Leech, Andrews (for Griffin), Hull, and Ms. Roberts.

Dean Gunter announced that the new conference room outside the dean's office was almost finished. The new tables should arrive today, and the rest of the new furniture should arrive shortly. The new windows, which may be made clear or opaque, are working. Bobby Watson will demonstrate the new technology, including the SmartBoard, in the room after today's meeting. If all of the new furniture arrives, Executive Committee will meet in the new conference room next week.

Dean Gunter showed a DVD produced by AACTE titled "Creating New Visions for Teacher Education." The DVD looked at what teacher education will be like in 2020--what will be taught and how it will be taught. Some of the primary areas which will be of importance to future teachers include: technology, internationalization, diversity, communication skills, and content knowledge. If any department head would like to use this DVD to show at a departmental meeting, he/she may get it from Dean Gunter.

Dr. McGahee distributed a handout of the Praxis II pass rates for the 2004-05 program completers. Each fall, Dr. McGahee submits to PSC a list of the college's program completers for the previous year. PSC takes this list and matches each program completer to his/her Praxis II scores and returns the list to Dr. McGahee each spring. Overall, for the 2004-05 program completers, the COE has a Praxis II pass rate of 98.4 percent; last year's pass rate for the 2003-04 program completers was 93.2 percent.

Ms. Roberts announced that Mr. Don Puckett will be on campus on Friday, August 18, to present to COE students. Mr. Puckett will have a presentation from 9:00-11:00 a.m. for students enrolled in COE classes; the focus of this presentation will be on interdisciplinary activities for teachers. The afternoon session, from 1:00-3:00 p.m., is for student teachers; and it will focus on classroom management and differentiated instruction. Both sessions will be held in the PE Complex.

Dean Gunter distributed a tentative itinerary for the August 8 COE faculty meeting. Once he finalizes the itinerary, he will send it out to COE faculty.

Dean Gunter announced that with the merger of the Departments of Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instructional Technology into the single Department of Curriculum, Leadership, and Technology, some faculty will move their offices. Educational Leadership faculty will move to offices currently occupied by Early Childhood faculty in the center office section of the first floor; and those Early Childhood faculty currently located in the first-floor offices will move to the offices currently occupied by Educational Leadership faculty.

Dr. McGahee raised the issue of how to deal with the challenges brought on by the new GACE I test; specifically, GACE I will be given only one time during fall semester and those scores will not be returned until February, 2007, after the beginning of spring semester. Therefore, students trying to be admitted to teacher education for spring semester and begin their professional education coursework will not know if they are admitted to teacher education until after spring semester begins. It was noted that Praxis I could still be taken until September 1, 2006, through Sylvan Learning Center. Additionally, students can exempt Praxis I (or GACE I) through the ACT, SAT, or GRE if their scores are high enough. Dr. Reffel made a motion that students, particularly those in 2999 classes, be encouraged to take the Praxis I before September 1 and take the ACT, SAT, or GRE after September 1 and that the COE maintain its requirement that students be admitted to teacher education before being allowed to enroll in professional education coursework; Dr. Hull seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

Dean Gunter reviewed items which had been covered at the deans' council meeting held yesterday:

Dr. Levy is developing a consistent method of dealing with students' appeals.

VSU will introduce a large fund-raising initiative in the near future.

Dr. Gravett is developing an advising handbook.

VSU is reviewing the possibility of developing a doctorate in nursing practitioners in conjunction with the Medical College of Georgia and a doctorate in nursing in conjunction with Georgia State University.

Dean Gunter noted that he has received some input on how to use the $5,000 given to the COE by Dr. Zaccari for the guest lecturer series.

Dean Gunter announced that he was going to re-constitute the Summer Faculty Responsibilities Committee. He also announced that the spring semester schedule was due to the Registrar's Office by August 11.

Dean Gunter asked department heads to give some thought to the idea of including representatives from other areas at selected Executive Committee meetings, perhaps deans from other colleges, representatives from the Graduate School, representatives from Information Technology, etc.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:45 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Donnie J. McGahee
