MINUTES OF THE MEETING COLLEGE OF EDUCATION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, January 25, 2007, at 8:30 a.m. in the COE Conference Room (Room 235) in the Education Center with Dean Gunter presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Leech, Stanley, Hilgert, Bauer, Martinez, Lee, Hull, Galeano, and Mr. Pearce. Guests: Dr. Judd, Dr. Brovey, Mr. Ike Barton, and Mr. Allen DeVane. Dr. Brovey announced that the COE Technology Committee had established a meeting schedule for the year; the first meeting of the committee will be next Tuesday. One item the committee members will discuss is upgrades to "Smart" classrooms. Mr. Barton and Mr. DeVane reported from the IT Department about technology changes affecting the COE. Some of the changes which have been made include: computer labs in the Departments of Psychology and Counseling and Kinesiology and Physical Education have been upgraded; computers for faculty which are being moved because of the construction have been relocated and set up; new projectors have been installed in Rooms 271 and 276 in the Education Center, and Rooms 200, 120, 81, and 122 are scheduled for projector upgrades; and the IT Department handled over 55 calls for technology assistance from the COE during the past month. Dean Gunter announced that the relocation of faculty offices necessitated by the construction in the Education Center will begin this week. Dr. Gerber announced that the Teacher Education Council had approved all of the COE curricular and course changes; the committee met on January 23. Dr. Bauer moved approval of the three new Area F courses; Dr. Hull seconded the motion. The three new courses are: EDUC 2110--Investigating Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education; EDUC 2120--Exploring Socio-Cultural Perspectives on Diversity; and EDUC 2130--Exploring Learning and Teaching. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Martinez moved approval of the renumbering of SPEC 2000 to SPEC 3000 and the Area F changes for the following programs: Art Education; Music Education; Interrelated Special Education/Early Childhood; Early Childhood Education; Communication Disorders; American Sign Language Interpreting; Deaf Education; Technical, Trade and Industrial Education; Health and Physical Education, Foreign Language Education, and Business Education. Dr. Stanley seconded the motion. With a few minor editorial changes in some of the programs, the motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Bauer moved approval of the re-positioning of ACED 2400 to Area D of the core curriculum, changes in the B.S.Ed. program in Technical, Trade and Industrial Education (secondary option), and a revised title and course description for ACED 3650--Career Education for Learners with Special Needs; Dr. Hull seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Bauer moved approval of changes in the B.S.Ed. program in Middle Grades Education, revised credit hours for MGED 4620, revised credit hours and revised course description for MGED 3990, revised credit hours and prerequisites for MGED 3991, and another track in the M.Ed. program. This new track will be for full-time students who are seeking teacher certification at the graduate level. The motion was seconded by Dr. Leech. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Bauer moved approval of changes in the B.S.Ed. program in Early Childhood Education, a revised course description for READ 7110, and revised prerequisites for ECED 3000; Dr. Stanley seconded the motion. After discussion, the proposed changes for READ 7110 were tabled. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Martinez moved approval of changes in the Endorsement Program for Talented and Gifted; Dr. Leech seconded the motion. A new course SPEC 7600 (Assessment of Children Who are Talented and Gifted) would be required in this program rather than SPEC 7610. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Bauer moved approval of a name change for the M.Ed. program in Interrelated Special Education/Early Childhood to the M.Ed. program in Early Childhood Special Education General Curriculum and changes in prerequisites for SEEC 4140 and SPEC 4110. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Leech moved approval of changes in the B.S.Ed. program in Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the M.Ed. program in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education, and two new courses (SPEC 5230--Field Experience Lab and SPEC 5290--Audiological Considerations for Teachers). Dr. Martinez seconded the motion. With some minor changes, the motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Martinez moved approval of changes in the B.S.Ed. program in ASL/Interpreting, revised course titles and course descriptions for SPEC 3120 and INTP 3010, and a new course (INTP 3150--English--ASL Translation). Dr. Stanley seconded the motion. With some minor changes, the motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Martinez moved approval of changes in the M.Ed. program in Communication Disorders, a revised title and course description for COMD 5110, a new course (COMD 5999-Entry to the Education Profession and COMD), and revised prerequisites for COMD 5120 and COMD 5160. Dr. Stanley seconded the motion. The new COMD 5999 course would allow Communication Disorders majors to have two semesters to meet the admission to teacher education requirements. However, the motion was amended to say that students who did not meet the admission to teacher education requirements in one semester would have to appeal to the COE Graduate Policies Committee in order to proceed into a second semester of professional education coursework. As amended, the motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Leech moved approval of changes in the M.Ed. program in the Special Education Adapted Curriculum program and six new courses: SPEC 5500--Characteristics of Students with Low Incidence Disabilities, SPEC 5510--Curriculum Design for Students with Low Incidence Disabilities, SPEC 5520--Assessment of Students with Low Incidence Disabilities, SPEC 5530--Systematic Instruction for Students with Low Incidence Disabilities, SPEC 5540--Positive Behavior Support, SPEC 5550--Communication Strategies for Students with Low Incidence Disabilities. Dr. Stanley seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Leech moved approval of changes in the Ed.S. program in General Special Education Option, a new course (SPEC 8110--Advanced Capstone Experience), and revised credit hours for SPEC 8040, SPEC 8010, SPEC 8060, and SPEC 8999. Dr. Stanley seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. Stanley moved approval of changes in the B.S. program in Administrative Services; Dr. Leech seconded the motion. The changes involved adding COMM 2300 and MGNT 4800 as electives in the program and changing the prerequisites for ACED 4070. It was noted that a course change form would be needed for changing the prerequisites. As amended, the motion was unanimously approved. Each department head reported on how the searches for filling faculty positions in his/her department were progressing. Dean Gunter distributed an e-mail from Dr. Adler concerning the Annual Graduate School Fair to be held on March 7.
