The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, January 18, 2001, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Gibbs, Gunter, Bauer, Atterbom, Swank, Price, Siegrist, M. Reed, and Ms. Roberts.
Dr. T. Reed announced that each department's total summer budget had been sent to the department head of each department. This amount includes funding for Maymester as well as the regular summer term. This amount is the final amount for the summer; each department head should analyze his/her summer schedule to make sure that the total cost of summer school does not exceed the summer budget amount.
Dr. Bauer presented an analysis of the Praxis II results for the school counseling students who took the test during last year. Areas of strength were: counseling and guidance, consulting, and the taped portion. Areas of weakness were: coordinating and professional issues.
Dr. T. Reed discussed the institutional report card which will be issued for each teacher training institution by the Professional Standards Commission (PSC). One possibility being discussed is to use the PSC program approval process as a means of rating institutions and take the emphasis off Praxis II scores. The PSC program approval process focuses on the six NCATE standards. Dr. M. Reed distributed a handout about the proposal for determining institutional report cards. Further discussion followed about whether or not to require a passing score on the Praxis II exam before allowing students to student teach. A number of institutions in the state have taken this approach. Dr. T. Reed appointed a task force to study this issue. The task force is composed of: Drs. Swank, Gibbs, Gunter, M. Reed, Bauer, and Ms. Roberts; Dr. Swank will convene the group.
Dr. M. Reed distributed copies of the overall results of the Student Teaching Program Improvement Survey (STPIS) for Fall, 1998; Spring, 1999; and Fall, 1999. Overall, the results indicate that students have responded more positively in their preparation for each of the ten conceptual framework principles over the three-semester period.
Dr. M. Reed also distributed the STPIS results for the Fall, 2000, student teachers. Discussion followed about the importance of the STPIS survey instrument and how valuable the data collected is in the overall program evaluation process for the COE. Dr. M. Reed noted that the STPIS instrument is constantly being updated; she asked for input about ways to improve the instrument. Dr. M. Reed also noted that one area which has consistently received lower evaluations is the effectiveness of the student teaching seminar. Discussion followed about this issue. Dr. T. Reed asked department heads to hold discussions with their faculty about the value of the student teaching seminars.
Dr. T. Reed reported that on either February 7, 14, or 21, he will present the COE budgetary needs to the president's cabinet; he asked for input from department heads. He will e-mail an outline of the requested presentation to all department heads.
Dr. T. Reed reminded department heads that faculty evaluations are due to him by February 12. Evaluations of department heads are also due by this date. Dr. T. Reed plans to meet with individual department heads during the first two weeks of February.
Dr. T. Reed announced that the closing date for the three positions in VOED, ECRE, and PSYC was February 20.
Dr. McGahee asked department heads to remind faculty that the new course prefix for all of his departmental courses will go into effect this summer. The new course prefix will be ACED (Adult and Career Education).
Ms. Roberts distributed a new recruitment brochure for teacher education.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:16 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Donnie J. McGahee
