MINUTES OF THE MEETING COLLEGE OF EDUCATION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, January 11, 2007, at 8:30 a.m. in the COE Conference Room (Room 235) in the Education Center with Dean Gunter presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Gerber, Reffel, Lee, Griffin, Leech, Hull, Hilgert, Bauer, Corbin, Backes (for Martinez), Stanley, Mr. Pearce, and Ms. Roberts. Guests: Dr. Judd, Dr. Johnston. Dean Gunter reported that Minnie Martinez had undergone surgery on Tuesday and that everything had gone well. She is expected to come home on Friday. Dean Gunter reported on the renovation project which is scheduled to begin shortly on the first floor of the Education Center. The purpose of this project is to renovate the offices in the middle section of the building to provide floor-to-ceiling walls. Work will begin on February 1; completion is expected to take 150 days. Faculty currently occupying those offices will be moved to other available space within the Education Center. Dean Gunter will send out an e-mail to the entire COE faculty about this project. Dean Gunter announced that the NCATE report had been received from Dr. Jerry Bailey (our NCATE team chair). Dean Gunter, Dr. Lee, Dr. Gerber, and Dr. McGahee have read the report for factual accuracy. Dean Gunter noted that the report contained just two areas for improvement for the unit: (1) Selected programs do not provide sufficient evidence for the preparation of candidates in the area of assessment of students, and (2) The unit does not have a systematic procedure to ensure that all programs use data for program improvement. Dr. Lee reminded department heads of the necessity to continue to add required data into the LiveText system. Dean Gunter emphasized the need to place as many student teachers as possible in our partner schools. Dr. McGahee stated that he would send out the number of placements, by major, for the Spring, 2007, student teachers after the meeting. At this point, Dean Gunter had to leave the meeting to attend a meeting concerning the Lowndes County Schools' Initiatives; Dr. Gerber took over chairing the meeting. Dr. Gerber asked department heads to send him, in electronic format, all of their Area F changes. Dr. Gerber will review these, make any needed changes, and prepare the materials for presentation to the Teacher Education Council. Dr. Hull distributed a request for a new course--COMD 5999 (Entry to the Education Profession). As part of the course description, graduate students in Communication Disorders are required to register for COMD 5999 during their first semester of enrollment and must receive an "S" grade by the end of their second semester of enrollment. This new course will be voted on at a future meeting. Dr. Hull also distributed proposed changes in the M.Ed. program in Communication Disorders, a revised title and course description for COMD 5110, and a change in prerequisites for COMD 5160 and COMD 5120. Dr. Hull also presented proposals for a change in the names of the B.S.Ed. and M.Ed. programs from Interrelated Special Education/Early Childhood to Early Childhood Special Education General Curriculum, a change in the prerequisites for SPEC 4110 and SEEC 4140, and a request for a new course--SPEC 7600 (Assessment of Children Who are Talented and Gifted). Dr. Hull presented a proposal for revising the M.Ed. degree with a major in Special Education Adapted Curriculum, requests for new courses--SPEC 5510 (Curriculum Design for Students with Low Incidence Disabilities), SPEC 5520 (Assessment of Students with Low Incidence Disabilities), SPEC 5530 (Systematic Instruction for Students with Low-Incidence Disabilities), SPEC 5540 (Positive Behavior Support), SPEC 5550 (Communication Strategies for Students with Low Incidence Disabilities), SPEC 5500 (Characteristics of Students with Low Incidence Disabilities), and SPEC 5051 (Assistive Technology Lab). All of these proposals will be considered for approval at a later meeting. Dr. Stanley distributed a proposal for another track for her department's ACT program--this would be an MAT track. The MAT track would be for students who are not teaching full time. This proposal will be considered for approval at a later meeting. Dr. Lee noted that so far this semester, limited assessment data have been entered into LiveText for advanced candidates. She emphasized that items need to be assessed and data entered into LiveText the semester the materials are collected. Dr. Lee also noted that portfolio assessment data are needed in LiveText for all initial teacher candidates. Dr. Lee and Dean Gunter attended an EPAAC meeting on January 9-10. Dr. Lee stated that it was announced at this meeting that the BOR Principles have now been aligned with the NCATE standards. Ms. Roberts announced that the first set of GACE I scores had been received. Sixty-eight VSU students took the test; 49 of them passed (72 percent). These scores are being entered into the Banner system and should be available on the Admission to Teacher Education page shortly.
