The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, January 11, 2001, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Gibbs, Bauer, Gunter, Corbin, Swank, Gerber, Price, Siegrist, Atterbom,
M. Reed, and Ms. Roberts. Guests: Drs. Pam Hertzog and Russell French.
Dr. Price moved approval of a change in the course description for ITED 8999 (Journal-Ready Thesis); the motion was seconded by Dr. Bauer. The motion was unanimously approved.
Dr. Hertzog introduced Dr. Russell French, from the University of Tennessee. Dr. French is a professor in the Department of Instructional Technology and Curriculum at the University of Tennessee and Director of the Institute of Assessment and Evaluation. Dr. French discussed methods of evaluating content knowledge of COE candidates, particularly as they relate to the areas of science, social studies, mathematics, and language arts.
Dr. French noted that teacher training has long focused on planning instruction, delivery of instruction, assessment of student learning, and classroom management. However, a new area of focus is on "content specific pedagogy"; that is, the teacher's ability to produce learning. Dr. French provided a comprehensive overview of an assessment program for teacher education. He will meet with departmental representatives from 10:15 - 12:00 today for a workshop on this issue.
Dr. T. Reed announced that the summer budget would be discussed at next week's meeting. A summer budget amount has been established for each department; Dr. T. Reed will e-mail each department head his/her allotted summer budget within the next day or two. Dr. T. Reed emphasized the importance of each department staying within its budget.
Dr. T. Reed announced that, for the present, PSYC 2700 will remain as part of Area E of the core curriculum.
Dr. T. Reed requested that course objectives, outcomes, and assessments for MSED 2000, BVED 2400, PSYC 2700, and SPEC 2000 be distributed at next week's meeting.
Dr. T. Reed announced that annual faculty evaluations will be due shortly; he will find out the exact date from the vice president's office and let department heads know.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:20 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Donnie J. McGahee
