MINUTES OF THE MEETING

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, February 27, 2003, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Swank, Ducharme, Schmertzing (for Price), Siegrist, Bauer, Atterbom, Reffel, Hertzog, Venn (for Gunter), Gibbs, Wehling, and Mr. Moss.

Dr. Swank noted that advisors were being more proactive about checking to see whether or not students had been admitted to teacher education. Dr. Swank is in the process of developing materials to assist advisors in checking for admission to teacher education.

Mr. Moss announced that he had met recently with representatives from the NASM (National Association for Schools of Music); these representatives were particularly interested in the Opening School Experience (OSE) required by teacher education majors.

Dr. Atterbom moved approval of changes in the M.Ed. program in Health and Physical education; the motion was seconded by Dr. Bauer. The proposed changes in the program would be as follows: (1) the program would be reduced from 36 hours to 33 hours (this change would be accomplished by reducing the elective hours from 9 to 3), (2) the number of hours required in the concentration would be increased from 15 hours to 18 hours (this change would be accomplished by reducing the elective hours from 9 to 3), (3) the 18 hours required in the contraction would be 3, 6-hour courses. As terminology related to "certification" is used in several places throughout the proposal, a question was raised about whether or not students could obtain initial teacher certification by completing this program. After it was determined that this program did not provide certification, Dr. Atterbom agreed to eliminate any reference to teacher certification in the proposal. The motion was unanimously approved, pending these changes.

Dr. T. Reed announced that Dr. Leo Pauls, Executive Director of The Renaissance Group, will be on campus on March 20 and 21. The Renaissance Group is an organization of approximately 33 medium-sized institutions; the focus of the group is on teacher education. Dr. T. Reed asked for volunteers to assist him in showing Dr. Pauls around campus, taking him to dinner, etc. The suggestion was made to perhaps invite Dr. Gravett and/or Dr. Hiers (Arts and Sciences) to also have dinner with Dr. Pauls.

Dr. Venn announced that Dr. Doug Fisher from San Diego will be in the COE next Thursday and Friday to conduct a two-day workshop on differentiated learning at both the college level and in K-12 settings. Department heads were invited to send representatives. Dr. Fisher will speak to the Executive Committee at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:13 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
