Dr. M. Reed distributed a handout (on behalf of Dr. Swank) dealing with on-going certification initiatives from the Professional Standards Commission (PSC).

Dr. T. Reed reported on a meeting which he had attended last Friday of the Board of Regents? Teacher Education Advisory Board. Dr. Kettlewell proposed that all B.S.Ed. programs in Secondary Education become B.S. or B.A. programs. If an institution elects to do this, it will be allowed to put an additional nine hours in the programs (for a total of 129 hours rather than the current 120 hours). The proposal passed by a vote of 34-6; Dr. T. Reed voted against the proposal. The recommendation must also be approved by the Board of Regents.

Dr. T. Reed led a discussion concerning our Teacher Advisory Council. The current membership is composed of five members from the public schools, the deans of Arts and Sciences, Education, and the Arts. Dr. T. Reed proposed that this make-up of the council be changed. He would like to see the membership composed of the deans of Arts and Sciences, Education, and the Arts, as well as the department heads from all three of these colleges, with the exception of Communication Arts. This group would deal with all education issues, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it would satisfy the Board of Regents? teacher preparation principle that we have a "functional unit." Discussion followed about this proposal. All department heads agreed that the reconstitution would allow a more collaborative perspective in our teacher preparation programs. Dr. T. Reed will proceed with the re-organization of the council.

Dr. T. Reed announced that there will be a meeting of the Georgia Partnership in Education on March 1; Dr. Bailey will be a featured speaker. Dr. T. Reed asked that some of the department heads, or their designee, attend.

Dr. T. Reed announced that he will make the COE budget presentation next Wednesday to the President?s Cabinet.

Ms. Roberts distributed the revised recruitment brochure for COE transfer students.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:14 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
