The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, August 23, 2001, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dr. T. Reed presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Bauer, Atterbom, Gunter, Siegrist, Price, Swank, Gibbs, Myers-Jennings, Mr. Pearce, Mr. Moss (for Dr. Corbin), and

Ms. Roberts.

Dr. T. Reed discussed the re-constitution of the Teacher Education Council. He distributed a roster of the 2001-2002 Council members. The Council will have four discipline committees: language arts, science, mathematics, and social science. A meeting of the Council has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 29, at 10:00 a.m. Three items will be on the agenda: (1) Discussion and review of the specialist program for early childhood and middle and secondary education, (2) Review of the Council's organizational structure, and (3) Discussion of how to include our P-12 partners on the Council. For the foreseeable future, it is Dr. T. Reed's intention for the Council to meet every two weeks. Dr. T. Reed explained that all teacher education program revisions must be sent first to the Teacher Education Council for consideration, then to the COE Executive Committee, and finally to the Academic Committee. Non-teacher education program revisions will not need to be sent to the Teacher Education Council.

Dr. M. Reed distributed a handout illustrating the COE Conceptual Framework. A great deal of discussion followed. Basically, this is the same framework that was developed at the COE Executive Committee retreat last spring semester. Department heads were asked to share the framework with departmental faculty by September 6.

Dr. M. Reed distributed a copy of the COE Policies and Procedures Handbook. The entire handbook will be reviewed over the next few weeks; Dr. M. Reed asked that we focus on sections 1 and 2 at next week's meeting.

Dr. Gibbs reported that his secretary, Ms. Sarah Mizell, has resigned her position. Dr. Gibbs reported on the progress of the Waycross early childhood program.

Dr. Bauer announced that Dr. Briihl has been asked by the American Psychological Association to serve on a committee to review undergraduate psychology education.

Dr. Bauer also announced that his daughter is getting married this Saturday.

Ms. Roberts thanked everyone for assisting with the orientation sessions.

Dr. Siegrist announced an informational session for the new doctoral cohort which will begin in January.

Dr. Gunter discussed the "Winning Teams" project in his department. He also announced that he had been asked to co-chair a state reform committee on special education.

Dr. Atterbom announced that a scholar from the Czech Republic will be on campus for two semesters.

Dr. T. Reed reminded department heads that he wanted to meet with them and their Personnel Committee chairs at

10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 30.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:12 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
