MINUTES OF THE MEETING

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, August 10, 2006, at 8:30 a.m. in the COE Conference Room in the Education Center with Dean Gunter presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Hilgert, Bauer, Martinez, Lee, Hull, Griffin, Gerber, Corbin, Reffel, Leech, Mr. Grubbs (for Stanley), and Ms. Roberts. Guest: Dr. Judd.

Dean Gunter announced that at the USG retreat for education deans held August 3-4 in Athens, the issue of criminal background checks had been discussed. The BOR is reviewing how the various institutions are conducting the background checks. For the present, each institution is to continue the process as it has in the past. At the retreat, Dean Gunter discussed the issue of video taping with one of the BOR attorneys. The attorney felt that any permission form which was developed did not need to be lengthy; in fact, she felt that a paragraph would probably cover the topic. Dean Gunter asked Dr. Gerber to re-visit the issue of developing a video taping permission form for the COE and present it for approval to Executive Committee. The BOR also released a proposed change in how Colleges of Education may compute students' grade-point averages for admission to teacher education. The policy allows colleges to use the forgiveness policy; that is, if a student makes an "F" in a course and then retakes the course and makes an "A," only the "A" will be used in computing the grade-point average. Each individual institution may or may not choose to use this method. This issue will be discussed at a future Executive Committee meeting. USG Chancellor Davis was also at the retreat; in his remarks, he noted the importance of accountability at each institution.

Dean Gunter reviewed the institution's goals. These include: enrollment and retention, academic programs, diversity, faculty and staff development, and financial support. Aligned with these institutional goals are goals for Academic Affairs. Dean Gunter noted that the COE's goals must be reflective of these goals. In the future, the COE's goals will be revisited and revised as needed.

Dean Gunter asked department heads to get announcements of positions to him. For each position requested, Dean Gunter wants: (1) Impact on P-12 learning for the program that the position supports, and (2) Data on FTE generated in that position.

Dr. McGahee distributed a draft list of program completers for 2005-06. He asked department heads to review it for any errors. A final completers list for 2005-06 must be submitted to PSC in the near future.

Dean Gunter announced that a draft copy of the IR (Institutional Report) must be sent to the NCATE and PSC chairs by August 21. Dr. Lee and Dr. McGahee are working on the report. Dean Gunter also announced that the NCATE/PSC pre-visit would be Sunday and Monday, August 13 and 14. Both the NCATE and PSC team chairs will be on campus for the pre-visit as well as the PSC liaison. Dean Gunter also announced that Mr. Don Puckett would be on campus on Friday, August 18, to conduct workshops for COE students and for the fall student teachers.

Because the orientation students arrived early, the meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:45 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Donnie J. McGahee
