The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, April 27, 2000, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dean Toth presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Dixey, Bauer, Gunter, Rimington, Atterbom, Siegrist, T. Reed, Price, M. Reed, Zahner, Swank, Lahr, and Ms. Roberts.

Dr. Atterbom moved approval of curricular revisions in the B.S.Ed. program with a major in Health & Physical Education; the motion was seconded by Dr. Price. These revisions had been presented at a previous meeting. Since that meeting, the faculty in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education have made a number of suggested revisions; Dr. Ducharme has assisted the department in this process. Dr. Atterbom presented an overview of the program changes. Dr. Atterbom stated that the syllabi format had been made consistent and that matrices had been prepared to correspond with standards for all appropriate professional organizations. Dr. Atterbom explained that the primary changes involved condensing a number of two-hour courses into three-hour courses. A few suggestions were made for changing course titles. The motion was unanimously approved.

Dean Toth announced that he had attended the final "wrap-ups" of the school improvement program at Charlton County and the reading endorsement program in Tifton. He related how excited the teachers in the program and the administrators at both sites had been about this innovative approach. New cohorts in the school improvement program have begun in Lanier County and Pierce County. He asked Dr. Zahner to give an update of the progress being made on the school improvement program; a committee is working to develop the school improvement program. Dean Toth also announced that the school improvement program would be one of the issues discussed at the May 9 COE meeting. Dr. Zahner distributed a request for proposals for developing the school improvement modules. The school improvement program will primarily employ the use of modules as teaching/learning devices. Dr. Zahner explained that the timeline calls for the first modules to be developed during summer, 2000. These modules will be used during the fall semester and revised at the end of fall. Faculty within the COE will be encouraged to develop modules; they will be compensated at the rate of $500 per two-week (20 hours) module. Dr. Zahner also discussed the required elements of the modules. She asked that any suggestions for changes in the "request for proposals" be sent to either her or Dr. Price.

Dean Toth asked for a review of vacancies within the COE:

  • Dr Siegrist--has filled two positions; waiting for permission to interview for a third position.
  • Dr. Atterbom--has interviewed three candidates.
  • Dr. Gunter--working on filling two positions.
  • Dr. Bauer--has permission to make an offer to one candidate; candidate for the School Counseling position has backed out.
  • Dr. Dixey--has interviewed two candidates for one position; top three candidates for a second position have dropped out; has requested permission to interview candidates for a third position.
  • Dr. McGahee--will have to re-open the search for one position; the closing date for a second position is May 10.

Dean Toth distributed a handout about the "Holmes Partnership"; it will be discussed at the next committee meeting.

Ms. Roberts asked for information to put on the television in the Oasis.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:55 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
