The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, April 29, 1999, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dean Toth presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Dixey, Gunter, Backes, Siegrist, Price, Bauer, Maina (for Atterbom), Swank, M. Reed, Lahr, T. Reed, and Ms. Roberts. Guest: Ms. Lynne Cater. Dean Toth reported that Dr. Atterbom's mother had died last week in Sweden. Dr. Atterbom is in Sweden making funeral arrangements; he will return tomorrow. Ms. Cater reported that Dr. Harris, Dean of Education at Columbus State University, had written a letter inquiring about the possibility of conducting Intech training in partnership with Columbus State, Kennesaw State, Armstrong Atlantic, and Valdosta State. Ms. Cater reported that some universities are awarding credit (both undergraduate and graduate) for the completion of the Intech training. Both the Department of Early Childhood and the Department of Middle Grades Education award elective credit in their master's programs for completion of the Intech training. Ms. Cater announced that a conference would be held in Room 78 in the Education Center this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to discuss how Intech training would be conducted state wide. Dean Toth announced that the final schedule for Summer Session I was due to him by Friday, May 7. Dean Toth reminded department heads that classes taught during Summer Session I must be revenue neutral. Ms. Roberts reported on the planned summer orientations. Each orientation will be limited to 200 students; faculty will be invited to the dinners held for the students in the Magnolia Room; a mathematics assessment test will be administered this year; and students must be enrolled in six or more hours in order to be eligible for financial aid. Dean Toth announced that the Roundtables held last night for the Curriculum and Instruction doctoral students were very good. Dr. Swank moved approval of a change in the credit hours for the honors section of KSPE 2900H (Health and Wellness for Life); seconded by Dr. Lahr. This proposal would change the credit hours from three hours to two hours. The motion was unanimously approved. Dr. M. Reed distributed a draft set of the new NCATE standards. A primary focus of these new standards will be on outcomes and assessments. Dean Toth announced that departmental annual reports are due to him by May 21. Dr. M. Reed will meet with each department's Curriculum Committee chair about program assessment. Dean Toth plans to meet with departmental Personnel Committee chairs. He wants to ensure that there is more consistency in the pre- and post-tenure review processes throughout all departments. Presently, there are too many differences in how departments are completing these reviews. Dean Toth has asked Dr. Hummel to chair this committee of departmental Personnel Committee chairs; the committee will make recommendations to him for improving the pre- and post-tenure review processes by August. Dean Toth announced that filling the vacancies in the COE for next year is proceeding very slowly. So far, only three positions have been filled. The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders has had a recent resignation-- Dr. Woods-Cripe. Dean Toth reminded department heads that the completed VSU application form must be attached to any application materials sent to the vice president's office with a request to interview. Ms. Benton in the dean's office is responsible for ensuring that all COE application packets are complete. If a department head has a question about an application packet, he/she should see Ms. Benton. Dean Toth announced that Ms. Diane Judd (ECRE) and Ms. Kristie Walsdorf (KSPE) had both made presentations at the recent meeting of AERA. Dean Toth announced that Vice Chancellor Muyskens has asked for a report by May 30 on what each college/university had accomplished in the implementation of the Board of Regents' teacher education principles. Dr. T. Reed is working on this report. Dr. T. Reed distributed a handout concerning the Board of Regents' teacher "guarantee" principle; he asked department heads to provide him with feedback. Dean Toth announced that Tracy Harrington had received a request from Belize for assistance. The University College of Belize is undergoing a SWOT analysis, which will involve a review of physical facilities, academic staff, programs, students, finances, etc. Anyone interested in assisting with this analysis should contact Dr. Harrington. Dr. Price announced that she will host a party for Executive Committee members at her lake house on Friday, May 7. Everyone was asked to bring a covered dish; Cecelia is keeping a sign-up list in the dean's office. Dean Toth announced that Sci-Fest was well attended last weekend. A large number of our faculty were involved. Announcements Dr. Price announced that some of the faculty who had been nominated for doctoral faculty were not members of the graduate faculty. Dean Toth announced that the National Teacher of the Year is a kindergarten teacher from Augusta. Dean Toth wants to invite him on campus in the fall. Dr. Swank asked department heads to remind their faculty that assigning grades to student teachers should be a cooperative effort between the college supervisor and the mentor teacher. Dean Toth wants to review the idea of assigning grades (A, B, C, etc.) for student teaching. Dr. Backes announced that there were over 60 registrants for the Southeastern Trade and Industrial Educators' Conference scheduled for May at St. Simons. Dean Toth announced that Phi Delta Kappa initiated new members on Tuesday. There are now about 30 members.
