The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, November 9, 1995, at 8:30 a.m. in the Dean's Office in the Education Center with Dean Toth presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Gunter, Wylie, Bauer, T. Reed, Dorminey, Ducharme, Ramsey, Swank, Price, Faber, Johnston, Milbrandt, M. Reed, and Ms. Roberts.

Dr. M. Reed reported that she had talked with her counterpart at UGA; UGA went through its NCATE and PSC visits last week. She reported that we could expect the first day of the visit to be an extremely busy time. The teams will spend Monday morning documenting weaknesses from the previous (1989) visit. Dr. M. Reed reviewed the packets of materials which will be made available to the NCATE and PSC teams. She also distributed copies of the new COE Multicultural Education brochure.

Dean Toth reminded department heads to be available in their offices during most of the day on both Monday and Tuesday. Department heads are scheduled to meet with the teams at 10:00 a.m. on Monday. COE standing committee chairs will meet with the teams at 11:00 a.m.

Dr. T. Reed reported on a survey of last year's student teachers conducted by the dean's office. The student teachers rated the teacher education programs they had completed, using the COE Conceptual Framework Principles.

Dean Toth discussed the activities scheduled for Sunday night, November 12. Department heads are to be at the Bailey's at 5:45 p.m. Dinner will follow in the President's Dining Room at University Center.

Dean Toth discussed the basic skills testing requirement for teacher candidates in Georgia. He distributed a survey for department heads to complete.

Dean Toth asked department heads to submit proposals for the Louie A. Brown Visiting Scholarship Program.

Dean Toth announced that the planning grant proposal has been written for the "P-16 Initiative." The proposal will not be mailed, however, until Dr. Benjamin returns on Monday. Dean Toth listed several area school systems which have requested to be a part of this proposal.

Dr. Gunter moved approval for a change in the name of the Department of Special Education. The proposed new name is: Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders and Science. The motion was seconded by Dr. Ducharme. Concern was expressed about the "and Science" part of the proposed name. After further discussion, the motion was defeated.

Dean Toth discussed the COE technology goals prepared by the Technology Committee, chaired by Ms. Carolyn Cox. He stated that the goals would be sent out to COE faculty today.

Dean Toth discussed the fact that the original "Plan for Change" has been somewhat supplanted by the "P-16 Initiative." Both of these documents will be placed in the NCATE Documentation Room for review by NCATE and PSC team members. Dean Toth talked about the differences between the two groups. Whereas the "Plan for Change" was strictly teacher education focused, the "P-16 Initiative" will be more all-encompassing. In fact, teacher education may be just a part of the "P-16 Initiative." A P-16 Council will take the place of the Teacher Education Council, which was originally recommended by the "Plan for Change."

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Donnie J. McGahee
