The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, March 28, 1996, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room in the Education Center with Dean Toth presiding. Members present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Ramsey, Gunter, Faber, M. Reed, T. Reed, Bauer, Dorminey, Johnston, Frech (for Price), Swank, and Ms. Roberts. Dean Toth distributed copies of the latest revision of the COE Mission Statement. Dr. M. Reed made a motion for approval of the mission statement by the Executive Committee and for its dissemination to the eight departments within the COE for their approval; Dr. Dorminey seconded. Dr. M. Reed noted that the mission statement had been reviewed by various groups of students. Several editorial changes were suggested. The motion was unanimously approved. The mission statement should be reviewed by each department and voted on by April 18. Training sessions for the Banner System will be held for COE faculty at the following dates and times: April 8, 8:30 a.m.; April 9, 8:30 a.m.; April 15, 2:00 p.m.; April 16, 2:00 p.m., April 19, 1:00 p.m. Faculty should sign up for one of these sessions with Lisa Benton in the dean's office. All COE faculty and departmental secretaries are required to attend one of these sessions. The sessions are approximately 1 1/2 hours long. Dean Toth distributed copies of applications for Banner System accounts. Each faculty member and secretary should complete one of the applications and return it to the Registrar's Office. Dean Toth announced that the proposed M.Ed. in Art Education will be recommended for approval at the April meeting of the Board of Regents. Dean Toth passed around a set of draft guidelines for the Distinguished Professor Program. Vice President Benjamin has asked for comments on the guidelines. Dean Toth distributed each department's part-time list for spring quarter. These should be completed and returned to his office by April 1. Dean Toth reported on his meeting with President Bailey, Vice President Benjamin, and Mr. Brignati concerning needs for the College of Education. Some of the topics discussed were: (1) imminent need for the University Center to be completed so that the Child Care Center can be moved, (2) a new air-conditioning system for the Education Center, (3) furniture needs, (4) commitments for various off-campus programs, but no faculty to support the programs, and (5) classroom and office space for faculty. Dr. M. Reed reported that she will survey approximately 200 student teachers in June. The survey will deal with students' perceptions of needed "program improvements" needed in teacher education programs. Dean Toth asked Dr. Swank to distribute to faculty the policies for administering course evaluations. Dean Toth is still getting some complaints from students about how some faculty members conduct the course evaluations. Dean Toth shared some of the excerpts from his evaluations by COE faculty. He intends to share these with the faculty. Announcements Ms. Roberts reported that only about half the students expected for spring quarter orientation showed up. Learning Plus training will be done on April 23. This is also the same day as Career Day. Student teachers from fall and winter quarters will also be invited to Career Day. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:05 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Donnie J. McGahee |
