The College of Education Executive Committee met on Thursday, January 5, 1995, at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Education Center with Dean Toth presiding. Present were: Drs. McGahee, Ducharme, Uhlir, Price, Wylie, Hertzog, Bauer, Merriman, Gunter, Reed, Swank, Ms. Roberts and Ms. Teel. Dean Toth handed out departmental budget summary sheets. He stated that he wished to meet with department heads concerning the personnel sections of their budgets. Dean Toth reviewed the status of faculty positions within the College of Education. After all of the deans have met with President Bailey, Dr. Brown, Mr. Brignati, and Dr. Michael, Dean Toth hopes to get final word about filling open positions for this year. At this point, we do not have permission to fill any position unless it is a replacement. Dean Toth reviewed a memo from Chancellor Portch titled "Strategic Allocation Policy Directive." Each institution may submit a proposal for one program to enhance national patterns of academic excellence. The program selected must be one that is central to the mission of the submitting institution. The proposal may include requests for: new facilities, equipment, and facility reconfiguration. Dean Toth feels that the program which fits these guidelines best is the speech-language pathology program. At the deans' meeting this week, all the deans agreed that the speech-language pathology program is the one which should be submitted as Valdosta State's program. Valdosta State University's mission statement must be revised and submitted to the Board of Regents by May. Chancellor Portch plans to revise the framework for: research institutions, regional institutions, four-year institutions, and two-year institutions. In the revision of institutional mission statements, Chancellor Portch wants involvement from the entire campus community. The Institutional Planning Committee at VSU will have responsibility for coordinating the revision of our mission statement. Chancellor Portch wants each institution to submit a list of new programs which might be requested over the next 5-7 years. Dean Toth asked department heads to discuss this issue at their next departmental meetings. Dean Toth announced that there is an emphasis on collaboration between colleges/universities, public schools, and technical institutes. At the deans' meeting this week, it was decided to propose two major areas of emphasis: (1) Having a VSU representative at local two-year institutions (ABAC, South Georgia, Darton, and Waycross), and (2) Promoting a four-year degree program in conjunction with the technical institutes, such as the proposed B.A.S. degree program. Discussion followed concerning the Resume Expert Plus software being used by the Placement Office. Presently, students are being charged $20 by the Placement Office to prepare their resumes using this software. Dean Toth will write a memo to Vice President Brown asking if this $20 charge can be eliminated. Dean Toth announced that a new lab is being set up to use in teaching BVE 240 during the day and research-related courses during the evening. The new lab will be housed in Room 262. Dean Toth announced that there may be a possibility of receiving additional funding from the Professional Standards Commission for technology. Dean Toth announced that Chancellor Portch has decided that recognition for professor emeriti status will no longer be done at the University System level. Any such recognition will be done by the individual institutions. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:05 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Donnie J. McGahee |
