DEFINITION OF OMBUDSMAN:
The word "ombudsman" is a Swedish word, which according to one scholar, refers to "a person who has an ear to the people."
WHY DO WE HAVE AN OMBUDSMAN:
The ombudsman facilitates communication when problems and concerns arise among students, staff, faculty, and administrators. When this happens, these principles are followed:
Independence - Operating independently without regard to the endorsement of any individual.
Impartiality - Taking a nonaligned role when hearing a concern. The rights and interests of all parties will receive equal consideration. The ombudsman will not take sides.
Confidentiality - Keeping contacts, records, and communication confidential; pursuing complaints and discussing concerns only with the consent of the complainant.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THE OMBUDSMAN:
Essentially, the ombudsman considers and looks into claims of bias, iniquitous treatment, or erroneous procedures. In most cases the ombudsman is helpful by listening, giving consultation, and providing suggestions toward solution. Your input to the ombudsman is very valuable in the process of preventing major problems. The ombudsman may also assist in the progress of negotiating a solution to conflict. Although, the ombudsman cannot always promise the outcome you were hoping for, the ombudsman can guarantee to listen, be fair, and be responsive to your needs.
WHO NEEDS AN OMBUDSMAN:
If you are a student or faculty member, and find yourself with a concern, problem, or complaint concerning the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, you can make use of the ombudsman. You can also give comments and constructive criticism to make the department stronger. The position of ombudsman is founded on the idea that there are two sides to every story. The ombudsman considers both sides in an impartial and objective way in order to resolve the problem or concern. The name of the person requesting help or bringing the concern to the ombudsman can only be used with permission.
