Health and Wellness for Life

KSPE 2000 2-0-2

A course of study investigating the major health problems in modern society, with emphasis on methods of understanding and developing lifestyle changes for longer and healthier life. Information on topics such as alcohol drugs, stress management, nutrition, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and parenthood, cigarette and tobacco use, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases will be discussed.

Introduction to Athletic Training

KSPE 2050 1-2-2

An introduction to athletic training; this course provides basic information concerning the required competencies for BOC (Board of Certification) certification in athletic training. This course is required in order to be eligible to apply to the Athletic Training Program.

Advanced First Aid - CPR

KSPE 2151 1-2-2

A study of the advanced  techniques of emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (adult, child, and infant) and accident prevention.  Each student to earn  CPR certification and First Aid certification.

Nutrition for Health and Human Performance

KSPE 3200 3-0-3

An introduction to the characteristics of the essential dietary nutrients and their respective roles in the body. Emphasis is placed on the effects of nutritional practices on health and human performance.

Exercise Physiology

KSPE 3420 2-2-3

An understanding of how the body, from a functional standpoint, responds, adjusts, and adapts to exercise. Topics include bioenergetics, neuromuscular concepts, cardio-respiratory considerations, physical training, and environmental concerns involving physical activity, athletic performance, and health-related fitness.

Kinesiology

KSPE 3430 2-2-3

Basic physical concepts as they apply to human movement are explored. Structural anatomy, neuromuscular physiology and biomechanical principles as they apply to sport skills and fitness activities are emphasized.

Organization and Administration Strategies in Athletic Training

KSPE 4250 3-0-3

A study of management techniques used in typical athletic training settings. General topic areas to include facility design, human resource management, information processing, and financial management techniques. Athletic injury insurance and legal considerations in athletic training will also be covered.

Foundations of Injury Prevention and Care

KSPE 4300 2-2-3

Provides the student with knowledge concerning sports injury prevention, treatment and taping skills. Emphasis is placed on protocols common in the athletic training profession.

Evaluation and Assessment of Injuries to the Extremities

KSPE 4350 2-2-3

A study of the advanced principles and techniques of evaluating and managing athletic injuries to the extremities.

Evaluation and Assessment of Head, Neck and Trunk Injuries

KSPE 4360 2-2-3

A study of the advanced principles and techniques of evaluating and managing athletic injuries to the head, neck and trunk.

Therapeutic Modalities and Pharmacology in Athletic Training

KSPE 4400 2-2-3

A study of the physical agents and medications utilized to treat athletic injuries.

Sport Related Illnesses and Conditions

KSPE 4450 3-0-3

Investigating signs, symptoms and treatments of illnesses and conditions common to athletes but not addressed in previous sports medicine/athletic training courses.

Rehabilitation Techniques in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training

KSPE 4490 3-0-3

Provides the student with the knowledge needed to develop comprehensive rehabilitation programs. The development of therapeutic goals and objectives, exercise gradation and methods of evaluating rehabilitation progress will be stressed.

Rehabilitation Techniques in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training II

KSPE 4491 1-2-2

A continuation of KSPE 4490, with emphasis on the practical applications of rehabilitation principles.  Current surgical techniques and therapeutic exercise protocols are emphasized.

Athletic Training Ethics and Psychosocial Issues

KSPE 4600 3-0-3

A study of the knowledge and skills that certified athletic trainers must possess to recognize the sociocultural, mental, emotional and physical behaviors of those involved in physical activity for intervention and referral.   Recognizing professional responsibilities is also stressed. 

Athletic Training Professional Practice Seminar

KSPE 4700 1-2-2

Co Requisite 4430  Reflection on educational competencies and clinical proficiencies.  Refinement of skills and concepts emanating from Athletic Training Field Experience (KSPE 4430)

Athletic Training Clinical Proficiencies I, II, III, IV

KSPE 3440,3441,4440,4441 0-2-1

A study of manipulative and motor skills required to perform athletic training techniques in clinical settings. Techniques reflect those presented in lecture courses.

Athletic Training Field Experience

KSPE 4430 0-0-12

Co Requisite 4700, an overall 2.75 GPA, completion of all coursework, approval of the Program Director.   A professional, off-campus field experience designed to give to the athletic training student practical knowledge of the operation of typical athletic training settings.
