Doctoral Program

Mission

The mission of Valdosta State University’s Doctor of Education program is to provide advanced professional education for experienced practitioners to meet the educational needs and challenges of South Georgia. The program draws on the region’s cultural and social diversity to develop graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for fostering equitable and inclusive educational environments. Graduates apply broad knowledge bases, critical thinking, inquiry skills, and ethical practices for the improvement of education in South Georgia.

Overview

The Doctor of Education degree program requires a minimum of 45 semester hours of coursework and a minimum of 9 semester hours of dissertation work. A GPA of 3.25 over all coursework must be maintained for a student to continue in the program. A comprehensive exam must be successfully completed at the end of coursework for a student to enroll in dissertation courses. The academic residency requirements are satisfied upon completion of two consecutive semesters of full-time coursework.

The doctoral program has moved from a cohort program to yearly admissions. Applications are due each year by March 15th for fall semester admission for Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction.
