Core Courses
The student will be able to describe multiple adult-learning development theories and the needs of adult learners. Students will be able to analyze the effects of college environments and policies on post-secondary students.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
List and describe adult learning development theories.
Understand and develop programming to aid the needs of adult learners.
Analyze how various college environments affect post-secondary students and learning.
The student will be able to collect, analyze, and interpret higher educational data. Students will be able to gather and apply educational research and research methods to improve practices within higher education.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Explain and distinguish among different approaches used for conducting educational research.
Utilize various technologies to aid in interpreting, conducting, and reporting educational research.
Compose a literature review in the format of the American Psychological Association (APA).
Conduct a comprehensive research study including analysis of research articles and educational research design.
The student will be able to develop instructional applications using a variety of software programs. Students will also be able to develop web resources after completion of the program.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Develop and distinguish the different strategies of planning and managing technology-based programs.
Understand the different ways that knowledge-based and industrial-based organizations can affect the teaching and learning of technology.
Access the internet and apply all class material to the real world.
Use technology to enhance learning and meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles.
Academic Concentration
The student will be able to describe and interpret the organization and governing systems and have an appreciation for governing entities within higher education institutions.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Identify the various types of organization theories for colleges and universities.
Identify those entities that govern colleges and universities.
Appreciate the decision-making analysis of complex organizations.
Develop different strategies to enhance organizational learning.
The student will have an understanding of the concepts of budgeting and financeand cost effectivenesswithin higher education institutions. Students will be able to define the differences, benefits, implications and issues of private institutions and public institutions budget and financial structures.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Understand different sources of financing in higher education.
Identify the various typesofstudent financial aid, budgeting, and cost effectiveness.
Prepare and articulate a budget.
Identify university mission and goals.
The student will be able to use planning strategies and evaluation information in efforts of defining institutional effectiveness.Students will be able to plan, design, and evaluate assessment tools used in higher education.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Explain the importance of assessment in colleges and universities.
Demonstrate various assessment methods.
Explain the importance of accreditation.
Conduct an assessment project for a higher education entity.
The student will have an understanding of past and current statutory and case laws pertaining to higher education. In addition students will be able to analyze and synthesize policies and laws in making decisions at the level of an administrator and/or policy maker.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Define legal terms found in court decisions.
Perform basic legal research.
Recall those landmark cases that established policies that govern higher education in the United States.
Identify the rights of students and administrators provided by the constitution of the United States of America and the constitution of the state of Georgia.
The student will have an understanding of the many leadership roles and applications within higher education. The student will be able to identify the contribution and functions in relation to curriculum planning, educational standards, and accountability.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Identify the different trends, issues, and theories regarding curriculum development.
Understand and identify the nature of an organization and structure of academic programs.
Identify the changes in academic communities and innovative institutions.
Electives
Thestudent will have an understanding of the historical and current environments of Student Affairs. Through this understanding,students will be able to illustrate competencies in the management and function of student affairs services.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Identify major theoretical perspectives associated with student development theory.
Express in-depth knowledge of at least one specific theory of student development/learning.
Recognize social justice attitudes and actions on campus and how they contribute to learning opportunities for students.
Apply three different student development theories to current or future practice.
Understand the cultural context in which development occurs.
The student will be able to describe student development theories. In addition,students will be able to analyze the student development theory and identify methods of application with higher education students.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Identify various theories in student development and apply those theories to the workplace.
Understand the need for diversity within the student population.
Gain appreciation for the holistic college student.
Assist in the development of college students by knowing and using the necessary resources.
The student will have an understanding of the history of American higher education. Students will be able to analyze historical trends and synthesize analysis to divisions within higher education.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Understand the history of higher education.
Link the importance of higher education to the development of the United States.
Identify and interpret the issues that the earliest institutions of higher education faced.
Define the contemporary and traditional roles of post-secondary institutions.
Field Experiences
The student will be able to discover higher education leadership through hands-on experiences within Student Affairs and Academic Affairs and at the end of the program will exhibit outcomes learned in an educational portfolio.
Upon completion of this objective, students will be able to:
Articulate a philosophy of higher education.
Communicate goals associate with leadership in higher education and provide a means of achieving goals.
Produce an educational portfolio displaying ways in which the aforementioned outcomes were achieved through coursework, internships, and organizational activities.
