Mission
The Advising Center structures the conditions in which instruction and student learning take place, and guides the early college academic experiences of students toward the identification and fulfillment of career and life goals. This is done by allowing students to weave the strands of personal and intellectual learning that are the marks of true higher education.
To accomplish this mission the Advising Center will:
-
Assist students in exploring the possible short and long range consequences of their academic choices
-
Make students aware of the wide range of services and educational opportunities that may be pertinent to the achievement of their educational objectives
-
Provide students and faculty with information on policies, procedures, technological applications and programs of study of the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and the University
-
Provide assistance for freshmen students placed on academic warning
All students and transfer students with fewer than 45 hours are placed in the Advising Center. Twenty faculty members from all departments of the Dewar College of Education advise students who are declared College of Education majors.
This includes:
- Business Education
- Early Childhood Education
- Middle Grades Education
- Special Education
- Communication Sciences and Disorders
- Physical Education
- Exercise Physiology
- Sports Medicine
- Psychology
A student is part of the Advising Center until he/she is accepted for admission into his/her major. The student is then assigned an advisor within his/her chosen major.
Faculty advisors and Peer advisors work to help the student meet his/her education goals. The student has the ultimate responsibility to monitor a course of study and fulfill degree requirements. It is the responsibility of the student to seek advising. Assistance is made available through the development of a supportive advising relationship with a faculty advisor and peer advisor.
