VSU-CEE Update

Drs. Prater and Whisler have been working hard toward continuing the success of VSU’s Center for Economic Education. As economic education is now taught in grades K-12, the VSU-CEE hosted two economics workshops for elementary school teachers. These workshops were held during the Spring 2009 semester and were both very successful. The “Focus: Economics” workshop was designed for grades K-2 teachers and had 22 attendees. The “Econ and Me” workshop was designed for 3rd grade teachers and had 17 attendees. Teachers came from as far away as Statesboro to participate in these workshops held at VSU. The attendees were given resources to use in their classes and participated in activities to use with their students when they returned to their schools. According to the Georgia Council for Economic Education, VSU was one of the few centers at which these two workshops were able to be held this year.

This fall, the VSU-CEE has scheduled two workshops for middle and high school teachers. “Financial Fitness for Life,” a personal finance workshop, will be held in September. On October 29 and 30, VSU-CEE will host “Teaching High School Economics and the GPS.” We look forward to hearing about two more successful workshops.

In addition to planning for and leading the workshops, Drs. Prater and Whisler will be conducting a poster session at the national conference hosted by the Council for Economic Education in Washington DC from October 7-10. The will be presenting a poster titled “Little Ideas, Big Results” and will share short activities that enhance classroom instruction with secondary and post-secondary economic teachers.
