The Importance of Surface Water/Groundwater Interactions to Water Quality and Subterranean Biology in the Lower Flint River Basin, South Georgia

Dr. Stephen Opsahl,

Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center

Room 1011 Biology/Chemistry Building

 Time: 4:00 -5:00pm

The rapid changes in landuse patterns and subsequent effects on groundwater and surface water systems may be viewed as ongoing watershed-scale experiments in South Georgia. Surface water/groundwater interactions are apparent in the lower Flint River basin which has served as a model system to study the interesting and unusual patterns of hydrology, groundwater quality, and subterranean biology. Understanding these important aspects as they relate to the Upper Floridan Aquifer system will help in the development of water management plans that will perpetuate the availability of high quality water in the changing landscape of South Georgia.
