Air Force ROTC's goal is to recruit, educate, train, and commission officer candidates through a campus program to meet the needs of the world's greatest Air Force.
We offer both a 4-year program for entering freshmen and sophomores and a 2-year program for juniors. Most cadets go through a 4-year program. There is currently a special opportunity for individuals within 1 year of graduation, and majoring in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics or Nursing.
The first two years is called the General Military Course (GMC). Freshmen and sophomore cadets are required to complete one Aerospace Studies course per semester. It's a one credit course that meets once a week for 50 minutes. Freshmen learn about the structure and mission of the Air Force and take a look at military life. Sophomores study the development of air power.
In addition, cadets attend a Leadership Laboratory (LLab) which meets once a week for 1 1/2 hours. During LLab, you'll practice customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, leadership skills; listen to guest speakers; participate in sports and physical fitness activities; and learn about areas of opportunity available to commissioned officers. You may also participate in base visitations and orientation flights.
Sophomores can complete the entire GMC in one academic year by double-enrolling.
The GMC will prepare you to compete for a slot in the Professional Officers Course (POC). Continuation beyond the sophomore year is not automatic and selection is based on merit. In addition, you must also successfully complete a 4-6 week field training camp. At field training, you will receive junior officer training, aircraft and aircrew orientation, survival training, weapons familiarization, and physical training.
Once you've successfully completed field training, whether in the 4-year or 2-year program, you'll enter the POC, a 3 credit course each semester focusing on leadership, management, communication, military law, and other officer skills. You'll also continue to attend LLab but in a more demanding cadet leadership position.
As an AFROTC cadet, you'll be given a job in the corps which will change each semester and increase with responsibility as you progress through the program. You'll also progress in rank as we try to mirror active duty promotions. Other activities you may get involved in include Drill Team, Arnold Air Society, Public Affairs, and various social activities such as a Military Ball and Detachment Dining-Out.
