A: On-campus employment is competitive; and the Student Employment Office does not guarantee job placement.

Q: Do I qualify for an on-campus job?
A:
 Current students who are attending Valdosta State University 6 credit hours or more are eligible for on-campus employment. If a student takes a leave of absence, withdraws, or is dismissed for academic or disciplinary reasons, he or she will no longer be eligible to work on campus as a student assistant.

Q: How do I apply for an on-campus job?
A: A student must complete a online student employment application.

Q: What paperwork do I need to complete once employment is obtained?
A: As a student assistant, you are required to complete state and federal paperwork, and information for Direct Deposit or CashPay, on or before the first day of work.

The following forms must be completed in conjunction with your hiring department and submitted to the Student Employment Office before you can receive your first payroll. (Note: These forms will be given to you during the hiring process by the Student Employment Office.)

Q: What kind of documentation do I need to present as an International Student once employment is obtained?
A: International students will need to complete all applicable state and federal forms in additional to presenting and completing the following:

  • Passport
  • Visa
  • I-94
  • I-20
  • Original Social Security Card or receipt for Social Security Card indicating that a card has been requested

Q: What types of on-campus jobs are available?
A:
 Different academic, administrative and support service departments employ student assistants in a variety of jobs. On-campus job opportunities may include: tutor, lifeguard, resident assistant, web design, front desk worker, and library aide.

All students have the opportunity to also pursue employment with off campus employers which may present a wider range of jobs and work hours. An international student should know his or her visa status and associated limitations before applying for off campus employment (Note: Questions regarding off campus employment should be directed to Career Services.)

Q: Who hires student assistants for on-campus jobs?
A: The hiring department will evaluate your job skills, your ability to perform assigned work and your availability for work. (Note: The Student Employment Office will assist you with your job search, but we do not hire for individual departments.)

Q: How many hours per week can a student assistant work?
A: You may work up to 20 hours per week during fall and spring semester (in all jobs) and up to 39 hours per week during summer semester (in all jobs).

Q: How do student assistants get paid?
A:
 As a student assistant, you will be paid bi-weekly (every two weeks).

Q: Can student assistants work during “breaks”?
A: It is possible to work during breaks; however, work is not guaranteed. The workload in many departments slows over break periods; because of this, the number of available on-campus jobs may be limited. It is advisable to pursue these opportunities well in advance of the break period.
