Purpose: You are required to complete Form W-4 so that your employer can withhold the desired federal income tax from your pay. You should consider completing a new Form W-4 each year and when your personal or financial situation changes.

Exemption from withholding: If you are exempt, complete only lines 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 and sign the form to validate it. Your exemption for 2019 expires February 14, 2020. See IRS Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax.

Remember, if you are claiming “exempt”, you are required to submit a new W-4 each year by February 1st.

  1. If you’ve had a life change (marriage, divorce, or change in the number of dependents), update the form W-4 (federal withholding) & G-4 (Georgia withholding) via OneUSG self-service. Please note that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released a new Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate, Jan 1, 2020, due to the federal tax law changes. If you would like to make changes to your Form W-4 in 2020, please be sure to read the instructions. Please note: if you do not submit a new form, withholding will continue based on your previously submitted form. If you have questions, the IRS has also published Frequently Asked Questions that you may find helpful (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/faqs-on-the-draft-2020-form-w-4).
  2. If you are currently claiming exemption from withholding and wish to continue doing so for 2020, you must re-select this option by February 14th in OneUSG.  Otherwise, you will be taxed as single with no adjustments per IRS guidelines.
