IGNITE Programs

IGNITE is an 8 week summer program designed for first-year students who want to get a jump start on their college education. This year there will be several summer IGNITE programs targeting students who are interested Leadership and Business.

IGNITE Leadership is designed to help students gain leadership skills through classes, academic seminars, and social activities. Students in the IGNITE Leadership program will:
  • Enroll in 8 college credit hours that focus on Leadership which will also count towards their VSU Core Curriculum required for graduation. Students will be registered for the following classes:
    • PERS 2160 Perspectives in Leadership: An examination of the nature of leadership from a local, regional, and global perspective. The course is designed to engage students in thinking critically about leadership. Students will actively communicate with fellow students and community leaders about the qualities and characteristics of effective leadership.
      • A 2-hour credit course that will count towards part of their Area B requirement of the VSU Core Curriculum
  • Participate in social events presented by CAB (Campus Activities Board) as well as other social activities created specifically for students in the IGNITE program.
  • Participate in leadership activities in their Residence Hall
  • Gain rare insight on how to succeed in their classes through academic seminars and workshops covering:
    • How to Achieve Financial Success
    • Leadership Exploration and Development
    • Critical Thinking
    • Develop and execute a community service project over the span of the term
    • Participate in activities during orientation that will help them feel more comfortable on campus

IGNITE program for Business major students is intended to help students learn practical business skills while they earn college credit. Students in the IGNITE program for Business majors will:

  • Enroll in 6 college credit hours that focus on Business. The classes taken will count towards their VSU Core Curriculum and major requirements for the Langdale College of Business Administration. Students will be registered for the following classes:
    • BUSA 2000 Introduction to Business: Overview of the types of business organizations and business procedures. Topics include the economic environment, businesses and their role in the economy, business management and leadership, the global economy, the role of consumers, accounting, and personal financial management.
      • A 1-hour credit course that will count towards part of their major curriculum requirements for the Langdale College of Business Administration
    • PERS 2710 Exploring Success: An exploration of success writings in biographies, research publications, and the self-help literature. Areas of application include business, sports, personal development, and interpersonal relations.
      • A 2-hour credit course that will count towards part of their Area B requirement of the VSU Core Curriculum
    • ECON 1500 Survey of Economics: A survey of basic economic concepts with applications to public policy issues.
      • A 3-hour credit course that will count towards part of their Area E of the VSU Core Curriculum
  • Participate in social events presented by CAB (Campus Activities Board) as well as other social activities created specifically for students in the IGNITE program for Business majors.
  • Participate in leadership activities in their Residence Hall
  • Gain rare insight on how to succeed in their classes through academic seminars and workshops covering:

Tuition, Fees, & How to Apply

  • Tuition: Students will be required to pay regular tuition and fees for summer classes. Students can view the tuition and fee schedules by visiting the VSU Bursary's website by clicking here.
    • Tuition and fees will vary depending on how many total hours a student decides to take. Please consider the following things before making a decision:
      • Students must be considered full time in order to be eligible for some (but not all) types of Financial Aid. Full time in the summer is considered 6 credit hours.
      • Please visit the Financial Aid website to see the requirements for the type of financial aid you are hoping to receive.
      • Students may register for additional classes during the advising and registration portion of their Orientation session on June 8th. 
  • Housing: Students participating in the IGNITE program will be required to live on campus as part of the living-learning community experience. Housing fees, deadline, and applications can be viewed by visiting the VSU Housing & Residence Life website.
    • There is a $325 Housing application fee
    • Estimated cost of a semi-private room in Hopper Hall is $1,075 for the Summer II term with the IGNITE program.

  • Additional fees: There are no additional fees associated with the IGNITE program. Students will be required to pay regular tuition and fees, based on the total number of course hours they choose to take. 
    • Food Estimate: The IGNITE Program meal plan will cost $798 and will include

June 9-21 & July 28-31

A “buffet" style dinner that will be served MONDAY – THURSDAY, during a specified time of the day (to be determined)

June 22-July 27

Students will have access to Palms Dining which will be open to service camps and can accommodate these meal planholders for any meal they wish to eat at four per week.  Additionally, the students will each have $250 Dining Dollars to spend at the market or the open retail locations on-campus (to be determined)

Students may add any addition dollar amount throughout the duration of the program to cover the cost of food by accessing their FLEX Account on Banner. IGNITE students will have access to each dining hall as well as the other dining facilities on campus once money has been credited to their card. This process will be explained in detail during Orientation on June 8, 2015. Important Dates

  • Residence Hall Move In: IGNITE students will move into their residence hall on Sunday, June 7th 
    • Move in date is tentative, please check the website for any updates
  • Orientation: IGNITE students are required to attend the mandated summer Orientation session on Monday, June 8th
  • Start of Classes: Classes for the Summer II term will begin on Wednesday, June 10th
  • Final Exams: Summer II term will conclude with final exams, scheduled for July 29th-30th
