Advising Tips

  1. Be sure to advise students to take the Regents’ reading and writing tests before they reach forty-five hours. It is generally advisable for students to have taken ENGL 1101 before taking the Regents, but it is not a necessity. Students should have time to take the test over before the forty-five hour mark, if necessary.
  2. Make sure that students have completed the appropriate pre-requisites for courses they wish to take. The BANNER system will reject students from registering for classes for which they do not have the required pre-requisites.
  3. If students transfer courses from another institution or were unable to take a particular required course, advisors must fill out appropriate course substitution forms (which must be signed by the advisor, the department head, and the dean before going to the registrar’s office. In the case of a core area substitution, the VPAA must also sign). You should also check to make sure that courses accepted from a junior college do not exceed the 60 hour maximum.
  4. Make sure that students have met specific college requirements.
  5. Remember that thirty of the last forty hours must be completed in residence at VSU.
