VSU Presents Physical Education Workshop May 3

VALDOSTA – The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at Valdosta State University will host the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (GAHPERD) Inc. Southeast District Workshop from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, in the PE Complex. This workshop is for grades kindergarten through 12 health and physical education teachers, as well as undergraduate and graduate college students, who seek to develop their professional learning skills.

Sponsored by the Coastal Plains Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) and GAHPERD Inc., the Southeast District Workshop “is a one-of-a-kind workshop put together specifically to give back to the [health and physical education] teachers in the area,” said Dr. Sonya Sanderson, associate professor in VSU’s Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education.

“Participants should expect to learn some great games, activities, new technology to use in physical education — known as exergames — and the latest and greatest physical education curriculum presented by experts in their fields,” said Sanderson. “They will receive expert advice on accommodations for student-athletes and injuries, how to create workouts without using equipment, and how to use dance for those who may be motor ability challenged.”

Presenters will include Brian Devore, GAHPERD Inc.; Dr. Eugene Asola, Dr. Han Chen, Dr. Matthew Grant, and Sanderson, VSU’s Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education; Dr. Brent Heidorn, the University of West Georgia’s College of Education; Evan Pettyjohn, Berkmar High School in Lillburn; Brack Hassell, Ethel W. Kight Elementary School in LaGrange; and Lori Howard, VSU’s Athletic Training Program.

Registration is $25 and includes lunch, a one-year membership to GAHPERD Inc., and one teaching professional learning unit of credit. The deadline to register is April 26. Visit http://www.ciclt.net/sn/resa/recl_application.aspx?CL_ID=166077&ClientCode=cpresa to register.
