Tubaween Comes to VSU Oct. 30

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University will present a hair-raising Tubaween at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, in Whitehead Auditorium. The concert is free of charge, open to the public, and sure to entertain ghosts and ghouls of all ages.

Dr. Daniel “Danny” J. Rowland, a lecturer in VSU’s Department of Music, said that his 14-member Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble has a rather creepy, kooky performance planned for the university’s first-ever Tubaween. There will be costumes, narration, and so much more, and audience members are encouraged to dress the part as well.

Tubaween will feature Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, as featured in the original movie version of “The Phantom of the Opera”; a four-movement original suite written by Vinson Butler IV, a VSU tuba student; the dark and beautiful “Tubifer’s Saga” by Tim Buzbee, which centers around a tuba player’s epic battles with management and maestro; the theme song to the classic film “Back to the Future; and a special arrangement of the “Twin Peaks” theme song by Rowland.

The Fresh Meat Quartet, a group of new music majors, will perform the fun “Toad Patrol” by Joseph D. Goble, and the Bloody Brass Quartet, led by student Stephanie Adams, will perform “This is Halloween” from Tim Burton’s “A Nightmare Before Christmas.” There will even be a nod to Oktoberfest, or Octubafest, complete with German liederhosen and songs.

Rowland hopes Tubaween will become an annual tradition at VSU.

Tubaween marks the culmination of VSU’s month-long Octuba celebration of recitals and concerts designed to bring attention to the “under-served and under-recognized” tuba and euphonium, Rowland said.

Whitehead Auditorium is located on the first floor of VSU’s Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Oak Street and Brookwood Drive.
