Hackathon Returns to VSU Saturday

VALDOSTA — The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Valdosta State University and Azalea Health have partnered once again to host Hackathon on Saturday, Feb. 28, in Nevins Hall.

Hackathon 2015 will kick off at 10 a.m. when the student competitors receive their problem domain. Working in teams of two to five, they will then have eight hours to develop the appropriate software solution.

Last year, noted Dr. Krishnendu Roy, an associate professor in VSU’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, teams were asked to design a software program promoting health and wellness among VSU faculty, staff, and students.

Hackathon 2015 will take place in Nevins Hall computer laboratories, located in rooms 2109, 2111, and 2115.

A demonstration of the students’ creations will begin shortly after the 6 p.m. design deadline. This will be followed by an awards ceremony, with the first-, second-, and third-place teams receiving $1,000, $500, and $250, respectively.

Roy said that he hopes Hackathon 2015 competitors leave the competition motivated and excited to pursue similar experiences in other locations.

“… hackathons are becoming really popular all over the country,” he explained.

Hackathon was created in 2014. It is a software and design implementation competition that offers college and high school students across South Georgia the opportunity to show off their computer science skills. Some of the teams are formed spontaneously at the event; others are formed beforehand.
