VSU Holds 2014 Career Games April 14-17

VALDOSTA - Valdosta State University will hold a variety of events and activities that focus on career planning and preparation, internships, job search and networking during the 2014 Career Games April 14-17.

A collaboration between the offices of Career Opportunities, Student Employment, Langdale College of Business Administration, Student Government Association (SGA), Campus Activity Board (CAB), and Plato's Closet of Valdosta, the week includes events throughout the day as well as some evening networking opportunities.

"We decided to establish a week that we could dedicate strictly to student outreach, and make it fun and engaging for everyone," said Ieshia Walker, cooperative education and intern coordinator at VSU. "This particular week is also SGA/CAB Week as well as National Student Employment Week, which is the perfect time to host these types of activities for the students. The week has a Hunger Games theme and is filled with contests that allow students to learn new things and engage in light and friendly competition."

The week begins Monday with free breakfast provided by Career Opportunities in the front of the University Center, at the Student Union outdoor courtyard and North Campus crane plaza. The day also includes a discussion on female career empowerment and a workshop on modern interviewing techniques.

"The highlight of Monday's activities is a fashion show at 7 p.m. in the student union ballroom," said Walker. "The fashion show is free and includes students, faculty and staff who will rip the runway in today's hottest business dress."

The week also includes a forum on social media dos and don'ts, a movie night, The Encounter internship and part-time jobs fair, and an evening networking event called Mocktails & Mingling.

The Career Games will conclude Thursday with several events, including the annual Student Employment Luncheon and Awards Ceremony as well as a cookout prior to CAB's spring concert, which features R&B and pop artist Sevyn Streeter.
