VSU Hosts 2012 Parents Weekend Sept. 21-22

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University will host its 2012 Parents Weekend on Sept. 21 and 22.

The weekend will begin with check-in from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by games in the Union Station, a viola recital featuring Dan Sweaney and then a showing of “The Avengers” in the Student Union Theater.

Saturday's schedule includes an academic expo that will allow faculty members and administrators to address questions and discuss various programs and resources available at the university. Other activities include art tours of Odum Library and a planetarium show.

Parents will have the opportunity to participate in a community service project with their students from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Student Union. They will join members of Jeans 4 Justice in decorating pairs of jeans as part of the organization’s campaign to promote sexual violence awareness and prevention.

The volunteer event is followed by a Blazer Walk along Williams Street at 5:30 p.m. Parents and students will end the walk at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and then settle in the stands to cheer for the Valdosta State Blazers as they battle the West Alabama Tigers. Tickets are $5 for parents when their student presents a valid student ID. Guests must pre-register and pre-pay for this event.

The University Bookstore is open for parents and students to use their discount coupons to shop for academic needs and VSU merchandise Saturday from 1 to 7 p.m. Parents and students can also enjoy air hockey, pool and ping-pong in the Union Station from 6 to 10 p.m. Movie Night will begin at 9 p.m. with a showing of “The Avengers” in the theater.

Registration for the weekend is $25 per person. The registration fee includes all scheduled events as well as lunch, souvenir gifts, a family photo button and a bookstore coupon. Some of the scheduled events are limited to a first come, first served basis. The last day to register is Friday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.
